Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. I may have to pull this book off the shelf and read it. This will be a great read! This is a very good copy in a good jacket. There is some spotting to the top of the pages--age related and a closed tear to the front jacket with an odd occurrence on the back of the jacket. The bookseller put a sticker on the inside of the back cover, and it left a mark on the outside of the cover. Included is a small booklet entitled: Tombstone Tales: Shootout at the OK Corral by Harold Love. First edition. First Printing. 1981.

4to (179 x 228 mm). 492 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. Written in brown naskh, with rubrication in red and sepia to highlight significant words and headings. The text is occasionally divided by ornamental flourishes and hizb or juz' endings; marginalia include uncoloured circular ornaments. Stored loosely in a full brown leather portfolio, blind-tooled with small rosette punches within geometric borders, with fore-edge envelope flap and a long leather tie. This manuscript contains "Dhiya al-Ta'wil fi Ma'ani al-Tanzil", the Qur anic commentary of Abdullahi dan Fodio (1766-1829 CE), known in Arabic manuscripts by his full scholarly name Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Uthman al-Fulani ibn Fudi al-Hausawi al-Maliki. It is one of the most substantial exegetical works composed in West Africa, intended as a systematic commentary on the Qur an for the scholarly community of the Sokoto Caliphate. - The work combines linguistic analysis with legal exegesis and ethical instruction, and was written to be used in teaching and study within the Maliki-Ash'ari framework. Abdullahi dan Fodio, brother of Usman dan Fodio (1754-1817 CE), the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, served as its chief scholar and jurist. He composed more than sixty works in the fields of jurisprudence, theology, grammar and Sufism, with "Dhiya al-Taawil" standing as his principal Qur'anic commentary. His writings shaped the intellectual and religious life of one of the largest Islamic states of nineteenth-century Sub-Saharan Africa and remain central to the scholarly tradition of Hausaland. - The manuscript begins with surah al-Fatiha and continues through to al-A'raf 7:127, where the commentary breaks off incomplete, and then resumes at al-Anfal 8:1, continuing without interruption to the end of al-Isra' 17:111. Thus, it lacks the remainder of surah al-A'raf after verse 127 and the tafsir of surahs 9-16 (al-Tawba through al-Nahl). The scribal hands remain unidentified. - Well preserved with some leaves showing short tears at head and foot, without loss to text. Generally in excellent condition. - The paper is European, bearing several distinct watermarks. Some leaves bear the letters C, D, and A, while others show a motif of three crescents, which appear in two forms: either as one crescent of normal size, a second slightly larger, and a third larger containing a human face; or as three crescents of equal size, each enclosing a face.
