Erstausgabe Signiert
First edition, first impression, presentation copy to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, inscribed on the front free endpaper "Lady Thatcher, On an evening like this I feel privileged to sign this book on behalf of the previous occupants of this house (in particular Henry Pelham, your predecessor!) and to thank you on behalf of the IMSS for your contribution not only to the institute but also history! 16 May 2002", signed by seven individuals including Patrick O'Sullivan, the chairman of Eagle Star Insurance, who published the book and then owned the house. As the inscription eludes, 22 Arlington Street was built by Henry Pelham, prime minister from 1743 until 1754. It is currently owned by the adjacent Ritz Hotel. The book remained in the possession of Thatcher until her death, afterwards dispersed in her estate sale at Christie's, 2015. Her posthumous bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Quarto. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt on red ground. With dust jacket. Slight bump at head of spine of book and jacket, very good.
