Bookplate of Shrewsbury Library to front paste downs. Externally, suffering from bumping and rubbing with the spines of the three hardbacks severely chipped and peeling. Several small chips to boards and all copies feature moderate marking and discolouration. Two cloth copies in slightly better condition with less loss of cloth but still suffering from the same shelf wear. Internally, generally firmly bound. Boards of all hardback editions particularly fragile with the board of the final volume almost entirely loose. Stamp of Shrewsbury Library to title pages and plates. First Edition. Good to very good copies all in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, now with minor surface-wear and some minor abrasions. Panel edges and corners show some wear. Spines gilt-tooled with raised bands and leather labels, the former slightly rubbed along with joints and endbands, and the latter partly or entirely lacking on a few volumes. Some joints cracked, with hinges weak and board becoming loose. Vol. 19 bottom edge shows a stain, with text unaffected. Marble endpapers; preliminary and final leaves foxed. Core text blocks remain uniformly strong, showing only the expected faint foxing and offsetting of age. A well-preserved set overall.
