The first edition of volume I of this collected edition of dramatic works from the 18th century English theatre. Volume I only of this collected work, which was initially intended to expand to eight volumes, but eventually reached twelve volumes. Each of the five plays in this collection features an engraved frontispiece, title page, and individual pagination, as called for. This volume consists of the works 'The Busy Body' by Mrs. Centlivre, 'A Bold Stroke for A Wife' by the same, 'The Conscious Lovers' by Sir Richard Steele, 'The Miser' by Henry Fielding, and 'The Suspicious Husband' by Dr. Hoadly. First Edition. Good copies only in contemporary full calf boards, both of vol. 1 detached, and all substantially worn. Spines likewise worn, with raised bands, these rubbed along with the joints and endbands, the latter showing minor loss. Corners bumped, with panel edges slightly abraded. Vol. 1 front free endpaper loose, the rear detached with the board. Vol. 2 rear pastedown partly detached, and creased. Both volumes' rear leaves show light marginal shadow-stains. Text blocks remain strong and clean on the whole, showing only the expected offsetting and scattered light foxing of age. A well-preserved set overall. A very good copy (lacking 1 prelim leaf, last text leaf of Fixtness and 2 blanks). Our book is a reissue of the 1675 first edition with a cancel title page, but otherwise identical. "This collection of eleven tracts is rare and often imperfect. most copies have a cancel general title bearing the date 1676" (Fulton page 87). A contemporary and uniform set of Johnson's masterwork of critical literary observations, all volumes uncut, in the original boards. The arms on the bookplate suggest that the previous owner who has signed and dated each title page "Fitzwilliam / 1781" is William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (1748-1833).
