Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Rev. Samuel Marsden -'the flogging parson' - is reviled in Australia's colonial story yet is revered in New Zealand and indeed accorded saintly status. Quinn examines this extraordinary divergence of views between the two countries, drawing on a wealth of material on the man, the times and places t…o explain them. Finding wide gaps in the research on Marsden's role and influence, he argues that his staus in New Zealand rests on untested assumptions of goodness, piety and disinterest"-- Book jacket. 219 pages.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. This copy appears to be the authors own copy. It has two laid in letters about the book addressed to the author and a postcard/photo laid in of the "Staff extension coy Wakapuaka August 1917' . A very close to fine copy. On 19 February 1876, New Zealand became telegraphically linked to the world -… it joined the international Victorian "internet". Contact with Sydney now took only seconds and London less than 24 hours. But unlike today when everybody is their own instant "telegraphist", in 1876 the system needed a small army of specially trained undersea cable operators. THE TAMING OF DISTANCE tells the story of those people - Englishmen, Australians and New Zealanders - who worked the cable, first from an isolated rural, coastal location near Nelson and later from Wellington central. But it is far from a narrow story of undersea telegraphy. It is set in the wider context of British ownership of the line, and interaction with the New Zealand Government and particularly the New Zealand Telegraph Department. It tells of a rapidly changing world of national and international telecommunications which, by the time the line closed in 1932, bore little resemblance to that of 1876. Above all, it tells how those men (and later, women) and their families, lived and worked as part of a unique international community.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Sari Indian Women at Work in New Zealand By Edwina Pio. Publisher: Dunmore Publishing; New Zealand , 2008. Very good softback, no inscriptions, some minor marks. 174 pages, illustrated. As well as exploring the layered lives of Indian women, it looks at policy areas of interest to fur…ther dialogue and assist with strategies that will enhance the lives of these women in our multicultural society. What is it like for Indian women who enter the world of work in New Zealand? SARI showcases the lives of Indian women working in New Zealand through four generations, in their own words and through official data. Stories of fabulous success merge with underemployment and no employment. Memories of Maori friendships and Maori relatives intertwine with mentoring by Pakeha women. Sewn into the stories are the spangles of an Indian patriarchal system which supported these women and at the same time created very strict demarcation lines; and the shaded sequins of in-laws who might manipulate them as they sought to carve out their careers and gain an education.
