In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Masculine Singular is an original interpretation of French New Wave cinema by one of France's leading feminist film scholars. While most criticism of New Wave has concentrated on the filmmakers and their films, Geneviève Sellier focuses on the social and cultural turbulence of the cinema's formative years, from 1957 to 1962. The New Wave filmmakers were members of a young generation emerging on the French cultural scene, eager to acquire sexual and economic freedom. Almost all of them were men, and they 'wrote' in the masculine first-person singular, often using male protagonists as stand-ins for themselves. In their films, they explored relations between men and women, and they expressed ambivalence about the new liberated woman. Sellier argues that gender relations and the construction of sexual identities were the primary subject of New Wave cinema. Sellier draws on sociological surveys, box office data, and popular magazines of the period, as well as analyses of representations in early New Wave films. She examines the development of the New Wave movement, its sociocultural and economic context, and the popular and critical reception of such well-known films as Jules et Jim and Hiroshima mon amour. In light of the filmmakers' focus on gender relations, Sellier reflects on the careers of New Wave's iconic female stars, including Jeanne Moreau and Brigitte Bardot. Sellier's thorough exploration of early New Wave cinema culminates in her contention that its principle legacy-the triumph of a certain kind of cinephilic discourse and of an 'auteur theory' recognizing the director as artist-came at a steep price: creativity was reduced to a formalist game, and affirmation of New Wave cinema's modernity was accompanied by an association of creativity with masculinity.

He questions traditional scholarship on the music of Cuzco (and elsewhere in Latin America, for that matter) in which the cathedral, with its strongly Hispanic traditions, is understood as the center and focus of viceregal musical culture. In a city that was inhabited by a strong majority of indigenous descent, focus on a cathedral-centered organization rehearses a colonialist perspective. Baker successfully challenges it.'--Carolyn Dean, author of 'Inka Bodies and the Body of Christ: Corpus Christi in Colonial Cuzco, Peru'.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Robert Morris is one of the most important postwar American artists. 'Have I Reasons' is a valuable resource for an understanding and reconsideration of his work and the postwar neo-avant-garde production in which it played such a pivotal role. Compared to his seminal earlier writings, those from the 1990s and beyond collected here are more insistently autobiographical, more overtly and straightforwardly political. This transformation is one that, at least in part, reflects a transformation in his visual art.'--Branden W. Joseph, author of 'Random Order: Robert Rauschenberg and the Neo-Avant-Garde'.

John Thornton Caldwell's argument--that we can learn a lot about the production of culture by looking at the cultures of production--is borne out in an analysis that ranges across texts, populations, and institutional and physical spaces. This is a superb book.'--Anna McCarthy, author of 'Ambient Television: Visual Culture and Public Space'.

Neuware - 'In this valuable book, Laura Levine Frader focuses on the French social model, the ideal of egalitarian social citizenship shaped and refined in the first half of the twentieth century. She argues that it was systematically undermined by employers, organized labor, and the state itself through practices and policies that built into it gender and anti-immigrant biases. Her insights, methods, and conclusions will be interesting to historians of other industrial societies whose welfare states are today under challenge from women and immigrant workers seeking equality of treatment.'--Herman Lebovics, SUNY Trustees Distinguished Professor, Stony Brook University, author of 'Bringing the Empire Back Home: France in the Global Age'.
