Fifth (and most desirable) Edition of this seminal work on electricity and its applications (first published 1784), with corrections and additions by William Jones. 8vo: xiv[bound out of sequence],594pp, with six copper-engraved plates. Tall, uncut, wide-margined copy, completely unsophisticated, in original drab grey boards, beige paper spine, printed paper label. An exemplary example, binding square and tight; pages, clean fresh and bright. Wheeler Gift 519b. Adams came from a family of makers of scientific instruments and globes, and was Mathematical Instrument-Maker to His Majesty George III. In the 1780s, he began publishing a series of illustrated texts dealing with the physical sciences. Following close on the heels of Essay on Electricity were Essays on the Microscope (1787), Astronomical and Geographical Essays (1789), Geometrical and Graphical Essays (1791), and Lectures on Natural and Experimental Philosophy (5 vols., 1794). The six engraved plates, including a new frontispiece, contain 105 figures, mostly illustrating various experimental instruments constructed by Adams, often at the request of the king in line with his interest in the practical applications of science. George Adams, an English optician and writer of the late eighteenth century, published a wide variety of scientific works, including essays on microscopy, electricity, astronomy, geography, and natural and experimental philosophy. Adams, who was mathematical instrument-maker to King George II of England was well-known in London. The five folding plates at the rear of this volume illustrate his mathematical and scientific instruments in detail. At the back of this volume is "A Catalogue of Optical, Mathematical, and Philosophical Instruments made and sold by W. and S. Jones" (14 pages) followed by a two-page notice of W. and S. Jones having taken over the stock of Mr. George Adams' "Philosophical Essays" after Adams' death in 1795. John Birch, whose letter on medical electricity accompanies this edition, was a surgeon, and the author of "Della Forza dell'Elettricita" (Naples, 1778). Second edition of a detailed and thoroughly illustrated account of microscopes and their use by the famous London optician George Adams (1750-1795), mathematical instrument maker to King George III, first published in 1787, but here with both the text and illustrations greatly expanded. Adams earned a worldwide reputation as a maker of spectacles and microscope lenses and wrote many scientific publications that give regular and systematic instruction in the most important branches of natural science with all its modern improvements, including the present one devoted to microscopes. With an owner's inscription of the Edinburgh Royal Society on the title-page of the text volume and an inscription, perhaps by the Glasgow professor of medicine, eye surgeon and fellow of the Royal Society Thomas Wharton Jones (1808-1891) on the first contemporary endpaper of the plates volume: "For the Royal Society Edinburgh from their . humble servant / Mr Jones". Bindings only very slightly worn. Frontispiece and title-page slightly foxed, also some foxing throughout the text volume.
