In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good or better. Later edition. 11 vol. [6], iii-c, [2], 3-267, [15]; [2], 3-368, [14], [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements); [4], 3-370, [4], i-vii, [5]; [4], 3-390, vii, [3], i-vi; [8], i-viii, [2], 3-359, [3]; [2], 1-380, [2]; [3], 2-424, [2]; [3], ii-vi, [2], 1-442, [2]; [2], 1-437, [6]; [4], 3-390, [2], i-viii, [2]; [2], i-xii, [2], 3-483, [1] pp. Contemporary tree calf with the spines in six compartments, each spine with a green and a black morocco label lettered in gold, gold tooling and decorations on the spines; all edges sprinkled. Each volume's title page with an in-text woodcut of a bust of various ancient persons: Plato, Aristippus, Diogenes, Pericles, Alcibiades, among others. Text in ancient Greek, with the notes and commentary in Latin. With Henry Stephanus' commentary and editing. Also with notes and analysis by Marsilius Ficinius, with additional various notes. Brunet 761. Dibdin 299. Moss 426-427. This set was published in twelve volumes. The twelfth volume was published in 1788, and contains only a summary of Plato's philosophy in Latin, and an essay by M. Thiedman. It would appear that this final volume is rare: as of 11/23/2022 this cataloger could not locate the twelfth volume of this set in OCLC, or in active commerce. All of Plato's philosophy which was published in this set is present in the first eleven volumes. Plato remains a foundational figure in Western philosophy, with his dialogues touching on metaphysics, love, justice, civic duty, and countless other ancient themes and motifs which remain relevant today. Plato is the reason we are able to construct a picture of Socrates' life: his work provides a good deal of historical information on the Golden Age of Athens. This is a very attractive set of Plato's works, edited by two seminal classical scholars. Minor wear to the extremities: overall the bindings are quite sharp except for the front joint of volume nine, which is starting. Each volume's front pastedown has an armorial bookplate and an early nineteenth-century name. Volumes six, nine, and ten each have a small, unobtrusive dampspot to a part of their textblocks.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First Bipontine edition. 8vo. [2], iii-xxxii, [2], 3-318, [34] pp. Half early nineteenth-century calf over paper boards, spine in six compartments with a red and a green morocco label lettered and ruled in gilt; all edges decoratively stained red. Endpapers contemporary to the binding are decorative with little red flowers hand-drawn on them. With a bust of Epictetus engraved on the title page, done by E. Verhelst. The best edition with various notes added, an index of uncommon words and Latin words that fell out of use. Dibdin 203. Gordon 112. Moss 283. The first Bipontine edition, according to Gordon, done in Zweibrücken. This edition contains a life of Lucretius by Lambinus. An edition useful to "less skilful readers of Latin", according to Moss. A beautiful poem discussing the tenets of Epicureanism, the nature of atoms and natural qualities of substances, love, the mortality of the soul and the death of our universe. An attractive edition of the rich discussion of ancient science and metaphysics, the only known work of the mysterious Roman figure who was admired by Cicero. Lucretius was an inspiration to the thinkers of the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras. The binding is quite sharp with the leaves showing light foxing, overall a beautiful copy.

In den WarenkorbVery rare first edition in French of the Wealth of Nations, the first translation following its publication in English in 1776. "This translation of the 1776 English edition of WN has remained a mystery. Was it printed in The Hague? If not, where was it printed? Who was M***, identified on the title pages as the translator? Copies are rare within French libraries" (Carpenter, p. 20). Carpenter & Sabbagh's recent scholarship identifies the printer as the ducal press of Deux-Ponts (now Zweibrücken). Though a commercial venture, the press used a fictitious imprint to avoid problems when printing French-language works that risked running afoul of the censor. The translator was Jean-Louis Carra (1742-1793), an active contributor to the Encyclopédie d'Yverdon, later in the French Revolution to join the Jacobins, where he was appointed joint head of the Bibliothèque nationale, but clashed with Robespierre and was guillotined in 1793. The text follows the original closely, omitting a section on religious instruction, alongside other minor religious changes. The edition was preceded in French translation only by an extract, Fragment sur les colonies en général, et sur celles des anglois en particulier, translated by Reverdil, which had been published in Lausanne and Basel earlier in 1778 to test public demand for the work. Goldsmiths' 11664; Kress B155; Tribe 16; Vanderblue 24. Kenneth E. Carpenter, The Dissemination of the Wealth of Nations in French and in France, 2002; Kenneth Carpenter & Gabriel Sabbagh, "Unveiling the First French Translation of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations", in Oeconomia, vol. 14, no. 1, 2024. 4 vols, duodecimo in 4s and 8s (162 x 95 mm), collates complete with half-titles and blank, "table des matieres" bound following title pages rather than at rear. Contemporary calf, twin brown and green labels, smooth spines with gilt floral decoration, marbled endpapers, red edges. Contemporary ownership signature of Mats Zachrisson to front free endpaper. Light rubbing and insect abrasion with some loss to lettering on labels, bindings otherwise with little wear and without repair, staining to Vol. IV and a few leaves in Vol. I else fresh. A very good copy.
