El presente trabajo es producto de una investigación de cuño etnográfico que plantea explorar y describir ciertas prácticas lingüísticas emergentes en un espacio académico multilingüe y de contacto lingüístico, localizado en el corazón de Suramérica, más precisamente en la frontera entre Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay. De este modo, por medio de un enfoque cualitativo, indagamos aspectos relacionados con las situaciones en las que los intercambios lingüísticos y comunicativos se manifiestan dentro de una institución universitaria que toma el bilingüismo como una herramienta para la integración cultural e intelectual de su comunidad académica. Así, a través de una lectura comparada entre la documentación oficial y las prácticas observadas tejimos un panorama sobre la situación lingüística de la institución. El interés por llevar a cabo un estudio etnosociolingüístico en una institución universitaria y fronteriza se debe al carácter inédito de un proyecto académico en el cual la instrucción se realiza en español y portugués. Este contexto permite a sus miembros el acceso a un entorno en donde el cuerpo universitario debe convivir y llevar procesos de aprendizaje en una lengua extranjera, permeados por diversas culturas académicas, lo cual ofreció un terreno fértil de observación, reflexión y análisis de una amalgama de prácticas comunicativas plurilingües y de intercomprensión académica.
