Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Hardcover. Vol. I. only. Full leather binding with gold stamping on spine and title stamped in gold on red leather label. Boards appear scuffed with bumping to corners, but there are no significant cracks to the leather. A nice, smooth volume you could slip in your pocket. Measures about 3.5 x 5.75 inches. Writing under the pseudonym Don Manuel Alvarez Espriella, Letters from England is an account of a tour supposedly from a foreigner's viewpoint. It is considered to present the most accurate picture of English ways at the beginning of the 19th century. Published in two volumes, but we only have the first volume available currently. Title page dated 1808. 256 pages, and this last ends in the middle of a sentence -- it looks like one or two pages has been torn out. Lots of illegible writing in ink and pencil on the front and rear pasted endpapers, and the title page similarly has been decorated with the names of many previous owners. There is also a two-inch tear, taking out the the top right corner of the page. Pages otherwise free of foreign markings, with only a few light blossoms of foxing here and there. Binding is strong. Overall, this volume is in good condition. Please e-mail us with questions or to request photos.

It is here published with the complementary work of Robert Merry, (1755-98), who was a member of the Della Cruscan school (named after the Florentine academy founded in 1582 with the object of sifting and purifying the Italian language; its emblem was a sieve). Merry noted in conversation with Rogers that 'rememberance, more frequently occasioned uneasiness than delight, that it was rather the source of regret than satisfaction.' Samuel Rogers turned down the post of Poet Laureate (1850) following the death of Wordsworth. The present American edition contains 'some few alterations and additions' (pp95-112). Modeled on the Spectator, these whimsical pieces travesty contemporary New York's tastes, society, and politics, showing the authors' aristocratic Federalism. The "letters" of the visiting Mustapha-Rub-a-Dub Keli Khan to Asem Haachem satirically describe "mobocratic" and "logocratic" Jeffersonian democracy, while other essays and poems deal in a humorous, pseudo-learned style with such various topics as fashions in women's clothing, the vulgarity of parvenus, theatrical and musical criticism, style in literature, and caricatures of celebrities. The better part of the book is devoted to the southern campaigns of the Revolution and America's tumultuous first decades, and to biographies of prominent early Carolinians. The Streeter sale catalogue notes that "as a survey of life in contemporary South Carolina is of great value." Ramsay "was a passionate opponent of British policy . If medicine was Ramsay's vocation, revolutionary politics was his most ardent passion. A strong supporter of the federal Constitution in his writings and as a member of the state ratifying convention, Ramsay ran for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1788 . It is no exaggeration to say that Ramsay defined an American national history. Among his contemporaries he stands out. for having been the first to compose histories addressed to the needs of the newly developing phenomenon of revolutionary nationalism." His History of the American Revolution and History of South Carolina "stood as prototypes for Ramsay's generation, and he became the nation's most respected historian and one of its premier literary figures" (ANB).
