This is Volume II of Andrew Mackay s The Theory and Practice of Finding the Longitude at Sea or Land (1801, second edition, improved and enlarged), an important early 19th century manual on practical navigation and astronomical calculation. Mackay, a Scottish mathematician and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, produced one of the most thorough guides of its time for mariners, surveyors, and navigators, covering the determination of longitude and latitude, compass variation, and the application of newly refined tables. The determination of longitude at sea was one of the great scientific challenges of the 17th and 18th centuries. Unlike latitude, which could be established using the sun s elevation, longitude required accurate timekeeping or precise astronomical measurements to determine a ship s position east or west. Before the widespread use of marine chronometers and the adoption of the lunar distance method, navigators often faced grave uncertainty, which led to shipwrecks and navigational errors. Mackay s work offered systematic explanations, mathematical tables, and fold-out diagrams to help mariners apply these emerging techniques in practice, representing the cutting edge of navigational science at the dawn of the 19th century. VOLUME 1 all published 1809, first published 1793 apparently in Parts with 28 plates, and according to ESTC the first 28 plates in the 1809 edition are the same illustrations as the 1793 edition (Volume 2 was never published). 4to approximately 230 x 160 mm, 9 x 6½ inches, 54 hand coloured plates, with explanatory text, plates 13 and 45 have a following plate with the same number given a star, no duplication of image, just the numbering, pages: [5], vi-ix [3], ii, ii, [102], followed by A Systematical Arrangement 1-28, (page "B" has a correction to text probably by author or printer, changing wav- to hav), rebound in full crushed black morocco, gilt lettered green title label to spine, gilt lettering and decoration with date to spine, gilt floral decoration to corners of both covers, gilt rule to edges of covers, marbled endpapers. Pale age-browning to 4 leaves of prelims, pale offsetting to many text pages facing the plates, occasional small pale spot, a very good tight handsome copy.
