First Edition. Octavo [22 cm] Bound in various different bindings, most contemporary, some cloth, some leather. The spines and hinges have had periodic restoration work. The extremities are rubbed to varying degrees. The backstrips have occasional losses and chips. There are cracks to the hinges, joints, and text blocks here and there. The brief markings to the pages are hardly worth mentioning, often only filling in errors in printed pagination (occasionally the pages are misnumbered or bound in out of order). The front board and preliminary pages of the combined volume, containing 1, 3, 4, and 5 are detached, but present. Pp. 269-272 of volume 16, number 17 have been cut out. There are tears to the beginning pages of volume 18. Volume 23 is ex-library (just a stamp on the Preface page). Volumes 1, 4, 11, 26, and 27 are missing the title and/or index and preface pages. Volume 30 has some dark staining, the result of pressed flowers having been laid in. In volume 54, the preface and index pages are bound upside down, and roughly a dozen pages have burn marks in the fore-edge margins, resulting in a little loss to the text. The boards of volume 58 are heavily dampstained. During collation, the following was noted: Volumes 1, 3, 4, and 5 are bound in one volume. In volume 1, No. 1 is a rare variant, printed in December of 1844, with the prospectus printed in a single column. Volume 3 is missing numbers 1-4. Proclamation of the Twelve, missing pp. 15-16, bound between volumes 3 & 4. Supplement of Joseph Smith's death, printed within black mourning bands, bound between volumes 4 and 5. Supplement to the Millennial Star, December, 1844 (Conclusion of Elder Rigdon's Trial) between volume 5, numbers 7 and 8. Volume 15 has "Supplement 1853 - Special Conference, August 28th, 1852" bound in at the beginning, and "Half Yearly Report of the London Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Held on Saturday & Sunday, 2nd & 3rd July, 1853" bound in at the rear. Volume 28 is missing number 51. Volume 37, No. 2 is missing pp. 21-28. No. 9 is missing pp. 135-138. Lacks No. 19 and Nos. 32-40. No. 24 is laid in loosely. No. 31 is missing pp. 487-490, and No. 41 is missing pp. 647-650. Nos. 41 and 42 are detached, but present. No. 47 is lacking pp. 743-746. Volume 33, Numbers 30-40 bound in. Volume 38. The majority of No. 17 is absent. No. 48 is missing pp. 759-762. Volume 39. No. 16 lacks pp. 247-250. No. 33 lacks p. 525/26. Volume 40. No. 2 is missing 23-26. No. 7 is missing 101-108. Nos. 28 and 30 are completely absent. Volume 48. No. 31. A portion p. 491/92 has been cut out P. 493/94 is absent. A number of volumes bear the bookplate of Willard Scowcroft. Willard Scowcroft was the son of John Scowcroft, owner of Scowcroft & Sons, which began as a candy confectionery and bakery in Ogden, Utah. The business eventually developed into a general merchandise and wholesale trade. Volume 20 has the bookplate of George L. Lambert. Volume 35 is ex-libris George Q. Cannon, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. A nice run of this important and influential LDS paper. Flake 4779. These issues of the "Millennial Star" cover the founding of the British Mission, through the expulsion of the Saints from Nauvoo, the founding of Deseret, the American Civil War and up to the early 1930s. "Millennial Star" was a newspaper penned for Saints in the United Kingdom. "The Star" provided the important function of disseminating doctrine and thoughts from leaders, and also informing the Saints of news from their American counterparts. Founded in 1840 by Parley Pratt, this paper enjoyed the longest run of any L.D.S periodical, ceasing publication in 1970. This important set of periodicals belonged to the prominent and widely influential Salt Lake City businessman Herbert S. Auerbach, with his notes present at the head of many of the issues. These notes are often in reference to the rareness of a specific volume. Herbert S. Auerbach was a Salt Lake City, Utah busin. …

Leather bound. Zustand: Good. Ninth edition, revised and enlarged. 378pp. Missing the front free endpaper, the last page of the index (p. 379), and the errata (p. 380). Vigesimoquarto (24mo) [11.5 cm] Full brown leather with ruled borders and decorative diamond-patterned blind stamping to the boards and backstrip. Title (L.D.S. Hymns) gilt stamped on the backstrip. Extremities rubbed. Contemporary notations and owner names on front pastedown and preliminary pages, including at head of title page. P. vii nearly detached. Dark staining of varying degrees to pp. 110-126 (pp. 113-122 are more severely stained, with text barely legible at times, and several lines on p. 118 completely obscured by an adhered strip of paper at the center of the stain). Flake/Draper 1767. Crawley 604. Chism 55. The second major revision of the European hymnal. Produced during Franklin D. Richards's first term as president of the British Mission. From the Preface to the Ninth Edition by Franklin D. Richards- "The ninth european edition of Hymns contains seventy-six pieces which are not found in the former editions; about sixty of which, are substituted for the same number which have been omitted. The hymns which have been retained, will be found on the same pages in the new book, as in the old. The new ones are distinguished by an asterisk (*) at the commencement of each, which is also attached to the first lines of the same in the Index. "The measure of the hymns, and also the number of stanzas are given, with a view to avoid confusion in the selection of tune and verse for singing. Thirty-two pages have been added to the present volume; an Index of subjects has also been constructed; and being printed on a superior quality of paper, a size larger than the former editions, constitute the most important alterations in the work. "The sale of the last ten thousand copies, in the short period of one year and a-half, together with the greatly increasing demand from all parts of the British Isles, has induced the extension of the present issue to twenty-five thousand, which, with the eight former editions, numbers fifty-four thousand published and for sale, in the short period of eleven years." Peter Crawley points out that the fact that the title is changed suggests that the ninth edition is a significant revision. With regards to the new songs, Crawley states that twenty-three "came from the Nauvoo book (item 103 [A collection of sacred hymns, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Selected by Emma Smith, 1841]), three from John Hardy's (item 186 [A collection of sacred hymns, adapted to the faith and views of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1843]). Forty-three are of Mormon authorship, including eight by Eliza R. Snow and eight by John Lyon; four by Parley Pratt; two each by Austin Cowles, John Taylor, John Jaques, and W. G. Mills; and one each by William Clayton, W. W. Phelps, Hosea Stout, John S. Davis, Cyrus H. Wheelock, and Mary Judd Page.".…

Zustand: Very Good. First edition. viii [1] - 120 pp. With the frontispiece folding map by F. D. Richards and all engravings and woodcuts present. Folio [31 cm] Rebacked in red leather with gilt bands and gilt stamped title on the spine. Original marble boards, with underlying boards exposed along the edges. Sprinkled edges. New gray endpapers. Hinges reinforced. Ex-library, with a single library label on the front pastedown. The front flyleaf has several minor tears to the fore-edge, and there are light tide marks (the majority of them small) in the margins of the plates. These marks occasionally just begin to bleed into the images. Caption title of bottom engraving on plate facing p. 44 trimmed close. The celebrated map shows the Utah Territory, outlined by hand in red, with its various counties; the Mormon trail is shown in brown and blue. In this map, Utah still includes Nevada and shows up as the only important Territory of the Great Basin. Fremont's routes are marked as well. The work was issued with 9 woodcuts and 30 engraved plates; all are present in this copy. There is a small pencil tick-mark next to the title of each of these on the list of plates. Lacking the tissue protectors. Scarce in any condition. A collection of engravings of the most significant landmarks and points of interest on the Route between Liverpool and Great Salt Lake City, such as "New Orleans," "St. Louis," "Camp at Keokuck," "Ruins of the Temple at Nauvoo," "Room in which Joseph and Hyrum Smith were imprisoned," "Wall against which Joseph Smith was placed and shot at after his assassination," "Council Bluffs Ferry & group of Cotton-wood trees," and "Great Salt Lake City in 1853." The book also includes portraits of prominent Latter-day Saints, including Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Lucy Smith, and Brigham Young. Extremely high quality illustrations made from the drawings that talented young artist Frederick Piercy made along the trail. Bibliographer Peter Crawley states that "Route from Liverpool ranks as the most beautiful book published by the Latter-day Saints." Wright Howes refers to this work as "One of the most elaborately and beautifully illustrated of western books," and Carl Wheat called the Richards map "one of the most illuminating maps of the West". Wheat further declares, "This is not only an important map in the history of Mormonism, but is in every sense an important map of the West, giving as it does a carefully drawn picture of that entire area. Practically nothing is shown in the whole of New Mexico, including present Arizona, but for regions to the east, west and north the map is accurate and reasonably detailed." Wheat closes by claiming, "The map was excellent for the period." Originally serialized in fifteen issues starting in July of 1854, this impressive volume was the brainchild of young convert Frederick Piercy, and Samuel Richards, president of the Liverpool Mission. They envisioned a travel guide for English converts who wanted to make the trek to the Salt Lake Valley. Piercy (1830-1891) was a gifted artist and engraver whose beautiful work fills this volume. The overland journey of the Piercy party was made in 1853. Starting from New Orleans, the party proceeded up the Mississippi to Saint Louis and Nauvoo, back to Saint Louis, and then across Missouri and Nebraska to Wyoming, and over the South Pass into the Great Salt Lake Valley. The woodcuts and engravings that illustrate this work provide a rare visual glimpse of the overland trail and the Mormon trail west to the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Crawley 1070. Pratt covered many doctrinal issues, including Celestial Marriage and the Preexistence. Brigham Young thought some of the ideas discussed were poorly conceived, and had the publication cease operation. In 1865, the Church of Latter-day Saints disowned the writings saying, "The Seer contains doctrines which we cannot sanction, and which we have felt impressed to disown, so that the Saints who now live, and who may live hereafter, may not be misled by our silence, or be left to misinterpret it. Where these objectionable works, or parts of works, are bound in volumes, or otherwise, they should be cut out and destroyed." Mormon Fifty 40. Flake/Draper 7610. Mormon Imprints 42. Crawley 770.…

The fine engraved plates include views of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Natchez, Memphis, St. Louis, Nauvoo, Joseph Smith and his Fort Laramie, Great Salt Lake and City, Brigham Young, and local landmarks along the way. "The following Work was originated in 1853, by a desire on the part of many of the latter-day Saints to possess a collection of engravings of the most notable places on the Route between Liverpool and Great Salt Lake City. [Piercy] made a journey to G.S.L. City and back to obtain original sketches. and in order to render it not only ornamental and interesting, but really useful, it was arranged that notes should be written upon the respective States and Territories through which the Route lay" (Preface). With an appendix of statistics related to Mormon emigration to Utah this work becomes not only a travel guide, but a history of Mormon migration, especially of English Mormons to America. Piercy arrived in the United States via New Orleans, after which he traveled north up the Mississippi to St. Louis, stopping as he says in Nauvoo to view the ruins. He followed the Mormon trail across Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, and over the South Pass into Great Salt Lake valley. The third major revision of the British hymnal of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A lovely example of this hymnal. In his bibliography, "A Selection of Early Mormon Hymnbooks. 1832-1872. Hymnbooks and Broadsides from the First 40 Years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," Shane Chism points out that Franklin D. Richards states in the preface to this edition, that the main alteration is the addition of "thirty-six pages of the most appropriate pieces available." This additional hymns occupy pp. 363-98, and include hymns by Eliza R. Snow, Mary Ann Morton, John Jacques, and William Clayton, among others. Also new to this edition, is the names of many of the hymns' authors has been added to the index to first lines. A very attractive early hymnal.…
