He could never lift a car with ease or alter his appearance with a technologically advanced suit. All Vincent knew was life as a regular teenager; spending time with friends and dreaming of asking out his long-time crush, Alexis. But all that was about to change when an unfortunate altercation on his first day of high school leads Vincent to discover that he possesses some rather unique abilities. A mysterious man arrives to take Vincent to a secret government agency where the truth about his past is revealed to him. There he learns of the prophecy that foretold his arrival and warns him of a villain searching to claim Vincent's power for his own. What he uncovers while searching for the truth about the prophecy will change his entire world, if he can survive long enough.

The antiquary John Stevens' abridgement and translation of William Dugdale's monumental Monasticon Anglicanum, complete with his two supplementary volumes. Called by Lowndes 'an excellent epitome'. The additional volumes add hundreds of additional monastic charters, also translated into English. "For the first time it treated pre- and post-Reformation monastic history as a continuum" (ODNB). When the Monasticon was re-edited into six enormous volumes in the 19th century, Stevens' two supplements were incorporated. This was the second English translation/abridgement of the Monasticon, following a much shorter and less successful version in 1693 by James Wright. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this radical tract, by the actor, playwright, and novelist Edward Henry Iliff, a friend of William Godwin. Iliff writes "the genus of society contains two species of odious monsters; Tyrants and Slaves" (p. 5), the former including soldiers, priests, and lawyers, the latter the poor multitudes. This "strident attack on the Army, Church, and political institutions was accompanied by a very Godwin-like insistence on the progress of reason and opinion and the utter repudiation of recourse to violence" (Mark Philp, Reforming ideas in Britain, 2014, p. 229). Patriotism should be enlarged to "a diffusive spirit or universal affection", so that "colour will make no difference in our relative duties, and a black Negro may enjoy the friendship of his white oppressor" (pp. 27-28). The pamphlet led to the prosecution of its publishers and sellers - Daniel Eaton was tried in absentia for publishing this pamphlet and a similar work, and was forced into hiding and then into exile in Philadelphia; John Smith was imprisoned for two years for selling the book, despite his claim in his trial as to being ignorant of its contents. ESTC T48835. Octavo (209 x 122 mm). Recent brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Contemporary ownership signature "D Constable" to half-title. Lightly toned and foxed, peripheral fraying to a couple of leaves. A very good copy.
