Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - As New England pioneers came to the Northwest Territory, they cleared the forests for their crops and livestock and also sought to transform the social landscape for the cultivation of their own moral values, political beliefs, and cultural institutions. Taking Michigan as a case study, Schwartz explains how settlers employed both legal tactics and moral suasion to impose their vision of a civilized society. He concludes, however, that although efforts to transform the physical and social landscape of the Northwest Terrioty generally succeeded, Michigan's settlers did not transplant Yankee institutions intact but rather blended New England and the frontier to create a hybrid society.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Powers of Prophecy is an original attempt to investigate the subject of medieval eschatological prophecies: how and in what circumstances they were written; how they circulated; what they told people about the future; and how they were received. Although scholars have studied the ideas of a few outstanding medieval prophetic thinkers or the role of prophecies in heretical movements and popular insurrections, up to now there has been no attempt to study the most commonplace medieval prophetic ideas as they were communicated in the most frequently copied and widely read anonymous prophetic texts. Dedicated to pursuing the typical, Lerner's book traces the fortunes of an eschatological prophecy that was first written around 1240 and thereafter circulated throughout Western Europe for more than four centuries. Originally composed as a response to the Mongol onslaught, the prophecy was resurrected and reconceived to apply to other crises such as the fall of the Holy Land, the Black Death, and the Protestant Reformation. Although it was supposed to have descended form on high, allegedly being a message written by a disembodied moving hand over an altar during mass, countless scribes felt no qualms about recirculating the text with substantial changes. Among the many who took note of the prophecy in one or another of its numerous guises were the scholastic theological John of Paris; the Infante Peter, a prince of the house of Aragon; John Clyn, an Irish monk who entered it into his chronicle shortly before dying of the bubonic plague; and Martin Luther.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - One of the most heavily ritualized spectacles of the 17th and 18th centuries, the public execution, warned of the wages of sin, reconciled the convict to the community, and demonstrated the authority of the state and the church. In New England, a clergyman not only played a central role in this ritual, he also wrote his own monologuethe execution sermon. Seay analyzes nearly one hundred execution sermons preached and published in colonial and early national New England and explores the themes of human sinfulness, the economy of conversion, and the nature and function of civil governament and the ways in which theological thinking about these themes changed over time.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Police departments and states attorneys offices acrross the country have adopted a policy of mandatory arrest and prosecution in cases of domestic abuse in order to safeguard the victim and impress upon the offender that domestic abuse is a serious crime. Arresting Abuse is based on Guziks ethnographic study in a Midwestern county in which he rode along with police officers, observed the mandatory arrest of alleged offenders, attended proceedings at Criminal Court, and interviewed a range of authorities. Guzik concludes that mandatory arrest and prosecution do not, in fact, lead offenders to view themselves as criminals deserving punishment but instead to view their encounter with the law as proof that they are victims of the justice system.
