Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xxv, [1], 646 pages. Endpaper map. Author's Note. Chronology. Illustrations. Maps. Notes and Sources. Index. DJ has slight edgewear and soiling. Karl E. Meyer (May 22, 1928 - December 22, 2019) was an American-based journalist. He received his MPA (Master of Public Affairs) from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. After being awarded a Proctor Fellowship, he earned a Ph.D. (in politics), also from Princeton University. In 1979, he joined The New York Times as the senior writer for foreign affairs, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. He served as judge for the Peabodys, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Arnold Toynbee History Prize. He was also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Century Association. Brysac was born in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University. While at Barnard, she attended the Juilliard School and danced as a member of the José Limón and Merce Cunningham Companies. After her graduation, she also appeared with the Paul Taylor Dance Company in Europe and with the New York City Opera ballet. In 1999, she was the co-author with her husband, Karl E. Meyer, of Tournament of Shadows: the Great Game and the Race for Empire in Central Asia. It was chosen as a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times and was a finalist for the Lionel Gelber Prize for "the world's best non-fiction book in English that seeks to deepen public debate on significant global issues." It was republished with a new introduction in 2006 by Basic Books. From a Foreign Affairs review by L. Carl Brown May/June 2000: A tour de force. On one level are stories of the soldiers, scholars, and spies who ventured during the last two centuries into the rugged mountainous territory, from Iran to Tibet, that made up the nebulous border between the Russian and British empires. They were serving either Britain or Russia -- or were believed to be. Later, a few Americans and Germans joined in, combining adventurous trekking with national interest. All the accounts, diligently documented, evoke a Kiplingesque derring-do. At another level, these stories assess the strategies and characteristics of empires: the "forward school" bent on pushing imperial boundaries ever outward, the phobia over what the imperial enemy is up to, and the reluctance to abandon territory once gained. Especially well presented are the ill-fated British interventions in Afghanistan that presaged the later Soviet experience. The authors give the last word to a retired great-game player: it was just a game "with scores, but no substantive prizes." From a Publishers Weekly article: Equal parts geopolitical intrigue and quest for Shangri-la, the Great Game was the imperialist duel for influence in Central Asia that occupied the best and the brightest of the Russian and British empires through the entire 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. In this detailed narrative from Meyer and Brysac, the story of the Great Game is told from the perspective of the explorers, soldiers and archeologists (many of whom frequently doubled as spies) who planted their nations' flags in the steppes and mountain passes of Afghanistan, Turkestan and Tibet. Among the colorful characters portrayed are William Moorcroft, the East India Company stable master who trekked to fabled Bokhara to purchase horses for the British cavalry, and SS officer Ernst Schafer, who led a German expedition to Tibet in search of a lost Aryan homeland. Notably missing is the viewpoint of the native inhabitants, though Meyer and Brysac do express admiration for the "pundits," the Indian explorers immortalized in Kipling's imperialist epic, Kim, who surveyed regions where Europeans feared to tread. A passing familiarity with Central Asian history would serve readers well, but even those who don't know a Gurkha from a yurt will get the gist. An impressive feat of historical synthesis that draws on sources ranging from published biographies to secret memos buried in the archives of the East India Company, this rousing history is written with some of the lan exhibited by the most stylish participants in the Great Game itself. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. viii, 340 pages. Bibliographical Notes. Index. Explores ways to live and survive in a nuclear age and examines the key areas of public morality, weapons technology, and international policy. Freeman John Dyson FRS (15 December 1923 28 February 2020) was a British-American theoretical physicist and mathematician known for his work in quantum field theory, astrophysics, random matrices, mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and engineering. He was professor emeritus in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. During WWII, he was assigned to war work in the Operational Research Section (ORS) of RAF Bomber Command, where he developed analytical methods for calculating the ideal density for bomber formations to help the Royal Air Force bomb German targets. He was awarded the 1996 Lewis Thomas Prize and the 2000 Templeton Prize. Derived from a Kirkus review: The debate over nuclear weapons threatens to get stuck between polemics and impenetrable technical arguments, and no one is better suited to get it unstuck than physicist Dyson--writing in a meditative, anecdotal, iconoclastic manner. As both a Defense Department advisor and a participant in antinuclear meetings, Dyson feels he can bridge the gap between the "victims," the people-at-large who view war in un-technical human terms, and the "warriors," the professionals who affect an air of unemotional detachment. Dyson tells the story of his uncle Freeman, an English public school master killed in the WW I trenches, and his father, who wrote a manual on grenades without ever throwing one in combat. While Dyson's father touted the grenades' ingenious uses--as if they'd been developed at the front, not in experiments--Uncle Freeman was concerned with non-technical matters like the rats in the trenches. Again, the point is simple but effectively made: we don't know what nuclear war is like, and we should beware of acting as if we do. The effects of WW II aerial bombing failed to match projections based on WW I, Dyson notes; for one thing, the mental breakdowns failed to materialize: bombing had become commonplace. So he is careful in arguing for a nonnuclear world. He pins his hopes on small, high-technology conventional weapons, specifically on a conventional ABM system coupled to satellite monitoring. Such a setup, tied to treaties eliminating nuclear weapons, would be able to protect against the treaties' violation. Dyson opposes the arms-controller orthodoxy of mutual assured destruction, or deterrence. Today's great threat, he believes, comes from tactical nuclear weapons, not from the almost obsolete hydrogen bombs. There is, he says, a constituency of warriors who can make do with less; and he is careful to spell out the dangers of denuclearization for world peace: hence, the emphasis on armed peace and strong conventional defenses. Dyson never fails to engage and inform. His view is one of reasonable hope. An exemplary and rewarding work. First U.S. Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].…

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Near Fine dj. First American Edition. [a lovely copy, no discernible wear to book; just the teensiest bit of handling wear to the jacket]. "Europe's premier screenwriter turns a uniquely sophisticated and knowledgeable eye onto the evolution of the language of film over its first hundred years. [He] explores the vocabulary of that language -- camera angles, lighting, the use of one actor rather than another, one setting rather than another, the subliminal messages contained in a full range of moviemaking techniques -- and discusses the ways this vocabulary has been developed and used by some of the most exciting and ground-breaking directors and cameramen of our time." Among the author's stellar list of credits are films such as THE TIN DRUM, BELLE DE JOUR, THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE, and THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING. Stewart Lee Udall (January 31, 1920 - March 20, 2010) was an American politician and later, a federal government official. After serving three terms as a congressman from Arizona, he served as Secretary of the Interior, under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1979, he returned to the West. In 1980, Udall was elected to the Central Arizona Water Conservation District Board and commissioned as a member of the Morrison Institute. Udall was presented with the Wilderness Society's highest conservation award. He was awarded the United Nations Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Udall received the Common Cause Public Service Achievement Award for his lifelong protection of the environment and defense of American citizens who were victims of nuclear weapons testing. In 1987, he published To the Inland Empire: Coronado and our Spanish Legacy, which retraces the trails of the explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado as he searched for the "golden cities" of Cibola in what now is Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Udall published The Quiet Crisis and the Next Generation in 1988, a revised edition with new chapters of The Quiet Crisis (1963). "The Quiet Crisis" introduced the Myth of Superabundance. In 1990, he co-authored Beyond the Mythic West, which examines effects of change upon the inhabitants and lands of the western United States. In 1998, he issued The Myths of August: A Personal Exploration of Our Tragic Cold War Affairs with the Atom. This is a devastating--but in the end hopeful--expose of America's atomic adventures from Hiroshima to the present, written by a former congressman, Secretary of the Interior, and longtime lawyer for victims of radiation exposure. A courageous and noble exploration of the cause and consequences of one of the most fateful acts in human history Udall's explorations began as a result of his discovery that Atomic Energy Commission officials had lied about the health effects of the atmospheric bomb tests from the Nevada test site in the 1950s, in the course of some of his unsuccessful legal representation of some of its victims. Here as always he names in his indictment of those officials who invoked national security reasons for their inexcusable behavior. . . .Udall is the highest-ranking public official with the courage and wisdom to tell us why we must end our cold war affair with the atom. The Nation. This timely and important book. Stewart Udall describes how since the end of World War II a small cleared elite group of nuclear scientists and bureaucrats has used the cloak of secrecy to limit public and Congressional oversight of America's nuclear policies. The tragic results, such as nuclear testing on unwitting Americans, are only now receiving public attention. "The Myths of August" makes a persuasive argument that excessive government secrecy erodes the foundation of a democratic society. Senator Dale Bumpers This] is a book about lies the kind of lies we tell ourselves to evade or obscure the truth of what we do or of who we are, the kind of lies we tell others to hide the same truths. Only here the we is the government of the United States, and the lies have to do with the machinery of deception that once kept this nation in thrall to an idea so fundamentally wrongheaded as to cross the line that separates stupidity from insanity. . . Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. xi, [1], 371, [1] pages. This collection of essays has sections on Stories, Things, Institutions, Politics, Books and People. There are Bibliographical Notes and an Index. Signed by the author on the fep. Dyson presents a selection of essays that include discussions of his early fascination with science and space, his contemporary analyses of the politics of "smart" weapons, and more. Freeman John Dyson FRS (15 December 1923 - 28 February 2020) was an English-American theoretical physicist and mathematician known for his works in quantum field theory, astrophysics, random matrices, quantum mechanics, condensed matter, nuclear physics, and engineering. He was Professor Emeritus in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Dyson originated several concepts that bear his name, such as Dyson's transform, a technique in additive number theory, which he developed as part of his proof of Mann's theorem; the Dyson tree, a hypothetical genetically engineered plant capable of growing in a comet; the Dyson series, a perturbative series where each term is represented by Feynman diagrams; the Dyson sphere, a thought experiment to explain how a space-faring civilization would meet its energy requirements with a hypothetical megastructure that completely encompasses a star and captures a large percentage of its power output; and Dyson's eternal intelligence, a means by which an immortal society of intelligent beings in an open universe could escape the prospect of the heat death of the universe by extending subjective time to infinity while expending only a finite amount of energy. From Eros to Gaia is a nonfiction scientific book of 35 non-technical writings by Freeman J. Dyson, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. This book is a collection of essays written from 1933 (when Dyson was nine years old) to 1990. It was originally published by Pantheon Books in 1992. The book begins with Dyson's juvenile 1933 science fiction story concerning the asteroid Eros. The pieces in the collection range over anecdotal history, expository popular-science articles, lectures on public policy related to science, political issues concerning problems created by science and technology, book reviews, and people (known personally by Dyson) such as Richard Feynman, Paul Dirac, and Helen Dukas. The book ends with Dyson's contribution Gaia to Clifton Fadiman's 1990 collection Living Philosophies. The concluding essay deals with the value and potential of the emerging Gaia philosophy.
