Perfect for the tourist market. Author is a genuine full-time storyteller. This collection contains ten stories which convey the sense of wonder of the world of fairies, where the marvellous and unexpected can always happen. The leprechaun is the shoemaker of the Irish fairy kingdom. He is a solitary, fun-loving and very crafty fairy. Often he is seen sitting cross-legged with a tiny hammer in his hand, working on a fairy shoe. Those who have been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him have described his appearance. He is no bigger than three feet tall and sometimes as small as twelve inches. Usually, he wears a suit of green and has fine leather shoes adorned with silver buckles. Sometimes he wears a cap with a feather. The leprechaun is the keeper of the crock of gold at the end of the rainbow and he knows where all the wealth of the world is buried. If you are lucky enough to catch him, you must keep your eyes on him at all times and not allow him to distract your attention or he will disappear. If he does not outsmart you he can make you very wealthy and make your wishes come true! The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The tragic tale of the sinking of the famine ship, the St. John in Massachusetts Bay in 1849. The Great Irish Famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St. John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St. John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark their last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. One woman's investigation of the role of women in the Christian Church since its inception, as she counters the Roman Catholic church's argument for excluding them from the priesthood Details the gradual exclusion of women from positions of power as the Roman Catholic Church evolved. Accessible account from the viewpoint of an ordinary woman in the Church. Cover quotes from Mary McAleese, Fr. Tony Flannery and Mary T. Malone. What About Me? Women and the Catholic Churchis an exploration by an ordinary woman, born into the Catholic faith of the arguments given to exclude her from ministry. Using her research skills, Sharon examines the New Testament, Christian writings and Papal documents. It is a personal quest to shed light on the story of women in the Christian movement from its earliest days to the present. The objective of the book is to explore, inform, speculate and question and it should appeal to a general audience. The context of the book is the 2010 move by Pope Benedict XVI to elevate the crime of ordaining women to Catholic ministry and the subsequent censoring of religious personnel who questioned this edict. This book details a quest to find out where the strong antipathy towards women in the Roman Catholic Church's institutional mindset comes from. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The period from 1913 to 1923 in Ireland's history of rebellion, is undoubtedly the most significant. The period takes in the revival of interest in all things Irish around 1913, the heroic Easter Rising of 1916, the bloody War of Independence 19191921 and the bitter Civil War of 19221923. Here for the first time, are images of all these episodes, the people, the places, city and country, with insightful commentary describing the context of each photograph. This book gives the reader glimpses of what happened and what life was like during the Irish revolution through photographs of the time. Photographs played an increasingly important role as the Irish struggle for independence took hold, first as memorabilia after the Easter Rising, later as propaganda, and were also of vital importance in the intelligence war fought between the IRA and the British. Includes previously unpublished photos sourced from private collections, the Irish Military Archives, Kilmainham Gaol and British military museums. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In 1919, Michael Collins conceived of a scheme to knock out the eyes and ears of the British Administration at Dublin Castle by undermining and terrorising the police so that the British would react blindly and drive the Irish people to support of the Irish Republican Army. The Bureau of Military History interviewed those involved in this scheme in the early 1950s with the assurance that the material would not be published in their lifetimes. A few of the contributions were made available by the families of those involved, but the bulk of them have only recently been released. This is the first book to make use of those interviews. It makes fascinating, almost unique reading, because they contain first-hand descriptions in which men speak candidly of their involvement in killing selected people at close range. As a result it throws a considerable amount of new light on the activities of the Squad and the intelligence operations of Michael Collins. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A Walk Through Rebel Dublin 1916 is a comprehensively illustrated guide to the Rising of Easter Week 1916, based on the significant locations of the rebellion. Dealing separately with thirty buildings and sites throughout the city including the GPO, Liberty Hall, Trinity College, the Four Courts and Dublin Castle the author provides a brief, fascinating history of the events and personalities that dominated these locations during Easter Week. A contemporary photograph of each location is juxtaposed with a photograph of the building or streetscape as it looks today. While some dramatic changes have taken place in the architecture of Dublin over the course of the twentieth century, there is much that has remained unaltered, as these images will testify. A Walk Through Rebel Dublin 1916 can be read and enjoyed without visiting the locations featured, but the reader is encouraged to walk the streets of Dublin, book in hand, to get a vivid sense of some of the most dramatic episodes in Irelands history.
