Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+. First Edition; First Printing. A first edition/first printing in Very Good+ condition with minimal shelfwear in alike dust-jacket with similar wear; Monte Cassino is a topography of blood and bone. The landscape is pitted with craters, gouged by shells and bombs, scarred by land mines and machine-gun fire. But even more than the physical damage, Monte Cassino has taken on a psychological weight. For many, it is the site of the greatest slaughter of World War II--the Battle of Monte Cassino, which claimed over 15,000 Allied lives. For Hapgood and Richardson, the tragedy of Monte Cassino was also a subject of fascination. They traveled to the mountain and recorded their impressions in this book. From the shattered monastery to the blasted towns below, the authors evoke the emotional power of the place. They tell the story of the battle, the heroism of the men who fought there, and the cost of victory.Monte Cassino is a gripping account of one of the great conflicts of the twentieth century and a testament to the human spirit.; 8vo; 269 pages.

First edition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist's enchanting memoir. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "To Bill Safire, who could have written it better - Russ Baker Sept 1982." The recipient, William Safire was an important American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixonâ s campaign for the 1960 Presidential race, and supported him again in 1968. After Nixonâ s 1968 victory, Safire served as a speechwriter for him and Spiro Agnew. He authored several political columns in addition to his weekly column â On Languageâ in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death and authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safireâ s â magnum opus,â Safireâ s Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Louise Fili. Growing up is everything one would expect from a writer who, as Time declared in its cover story, has "raised humor to the realm of literature." Superbly entertaining, it is also a fine and true book about American life.
