A reprint of the 1962 first edition of Dowell history of Webley pistols and revolvers and the development of the pistol cartridge. £65.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy to future British prime minister Edward Heath, with his name calligraphically added to a printed presentation slip, "presented to The Rt. Hon. Edward Heath, M.P., by the Jamestown Foundation of the Commonwealth of Virginia in commemoration of the 350th anniversary of the convening of the first general assembly of Virginia at Jamestown on July 30, 1619". The book was published to commemorate the 350th anniversary, alongside an official ceremony held on Jamestown Island, with Horace King, speaker of the British House of Commons, delivering the principal address. It contains a facsimile of the hand-written accounts of the first assembly, with a printed transcript on the facing pages. Copies were presented to all members of the Virginia Assembly and to other dignitaries. We cannot find any evidence Edward Heath, then leader of the British Conservative Party and leader of the opposition, was in attendance, and he was presumably sent the volume as a prominent figure in the British parliament. Heath was elected prime minister the following year, holding the position until 1974. Large octavo. Original sheep, spine lettered in gilt, gilt crests to covers, blue endpapers, top edge gilt. A little rubbed at extremities. A very good copy.
