Michael Schmidt (1945-2014) is widely regarded as one of the central figures in post war German photography. From the 1970s onward he developed a distinctive visual language characterised by muted tonal ranges, deliberate sequencing, and an unsentimental attention to the social, architectural, and psychological structures shaping modern Germany. His photobooks are recognised for their intellectual rigour and conceptual coherence. Following the landmark series Waffenruhe (1987), which captured the tense atmosphere of a still divided Berlin, and Ein Heit (1996), his sceptical meditation on reunification, Schmidt turned in Irgendwo to landscapes and marginal spaces whose meanings remain deliberately open. The title - translating simply as "Somewhere" - signals the work's refusal of fixed geographical or narrative anchors. Forests, fields, anonymous roadsides, animals, and dispersed human figures are rendered with Schmidt's characteristic visual restraint.
