Birgit Werres findet ihre Materialien auf Lagerplätzen und Produktionsstandorten der Industrie, deren ständiger Gast sie ist. Dort stößt sie auf die Dinge, die ihr ästhetisches Interesse wecken. Ihre Wahrnehmung ist über viele Jahre geschult; ihr Akademiestudium hatte sie zunächst zu Tony Cragg geführt, bevor sie es bei Irmin Kamp abschloss. Ihre Umwidmung der profanen Gegenständlichkeit vollzieht sie in Reihungen, Schichtungen oder Materialverbünden. In solchen Arbeiten führt die Künstlerin immer wieder formale Charakteristika wie Volumen, Textur oder Struktur fort. Eine herausragende Rolle spielt dabei oft auch die signalhafte Eigenfarbigkeit der verwendeten Materialien. Diese läuft häufig der monumentalen Körperlichkeit der Objekte zuwider und verrätselt Herkunft, Funktion und Eigenschaften des Materials zusätzlich. Für ihre unkonventionellen Skulpturen und Installationen werden gerne als Referenz Kollegen von Robert Smithson, Barry Le Va, Richard Artschwager bis Richard Serra aufgerufen. From the Publisher: "This book 'Daphne' conceived by Reiner Speck in collaboration with the artist provides a deep insight into Sigmar Polke's workshop and into the subtly ironic work of one of the most important artists of our day. This anthology of sources of visual inspiration and documents throw light on Polke's creative process in twenty-three chapters of differing length featuring large-format photocopies with strongly diverging motifs, thereby revealing that undoubtedly unique method of picture genesis: the old and trusted sketchbook seems to have been superseded here by files of photocopied sheets which at some point or other suddenly cumulate into the motif of a large picture or smaller graphic cycles.
