On the day Her Majesty the Queen opened parliament in 1984, she officially inaugurated the Noordeinde Palace a working palace. The palace, which had been lived in by Queen Wilhelmina until the outbreak of the Second World War, had naturally enough suffered as a result of the war, but the most damage had been caused by a fierce fire in 1948. After the fire-damage had been repaired, the palace offered shelter to the Institute of Social Studies and the Nuffic, which were housed here until 1976. During 1977 a start was made with a complete restoration and renovation of the palace. Probably the fact that the palace had not fulfilled any royal functions for more than forty years was the reason that a small gem within the palace walls had gradually sunk into oblivion: namely, the Indies Room, a small piece of Indonesia imbued with a very special atmosphere, in the middle of The Hague. The Indies Room, which still fulfils a representative function and which is the real source of inspiration for this publication, is known to only a few. The room recalls the colonial past of the Netherlands as a sober fact, but it also evokes the ties of friendship with various Indonesian rulers: a number of whose extremely beautiful tributes - persembahan - are on permanent display there. These are valuable objects, not merely because of the costly materials from which they are made; but above all because of their historical and cultural significance, as gifts on the occasion of the investitures, the regnal jubilees, marriages or births of various members of the House of Orange-Nassau.
