Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English and French text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 24 x 30 cm; 1.6 Kg; 240 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; ISBN: 2-88031-004-X.; Limited edition of 1600 copies, of which this is 614.; Used in very good condition…. Looks as new. Minor signs of wear on the slipcase and dust jacket. Interior as new.; "Among the 1932 acquisitions Mr. Baur restricted the choice partly to enamelled porcelains from Arita kilns and from Nabeshima, which found ready favour among Western collectors, adding also various later, nineteenth century porcelain wares which included in particular examples of Hirado, Kameyama and Kutani; and besides these he also sent a variety of enamelled pottery belonging to the Kyoto tradition, such as Kiyomizu, Awata and Banko. In 1933, the mixture remained the same - as indeed it was to do during the following years down to 1939 - with pieces by other potters working in similar styles, such as Eiraku. Altogether these wares include many of unusual interest, and of types not widely available in Western collections. But in any assessment of the merits of the collection there can be little doubt that pride of place must be given to the group of early porcelains from Arita and above all, to those made for the princely house of Nabeshima, which both in quality and in numbers are hardly to be matched in any collection outside Japan itself." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, 1982.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English and French text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in carton box); 23.5 x 29 cm; 2.8 kg; 428 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; ISBN: 2-88031-002.; Limited edition of 1600 copies, of which this is 822.; Used with signs of wear on…the exterior and interior. The carton box is worn, shows edge wear, scuffs, scratches and some yellowing. The dust jacket shows minor edge wear, scuffs and scratches. The outside text block shows some yellowing. Interior with minor yellowing on the rear of the front and back cover. Remaining interior in very good condition.; "The Baur Collection of netsuke is remarkable, both for the great variety of subjects and the great number of carvers represented. In addition it contains a striking number of true masterpieces. At the same time the collection is not so well balanced as one might wish it to be, some important artists missing altogether, others being almost over-represented. This has of course also its advantages. For students and collectors who wish for instance to study the work of Kaigyokusai (31 pieces), Soko (24 pieces), or the famous metal artist Shuraku (30 pieces) there will be few other collections that can afford the same opportunities." excerpt from the introductory text by Martin S. Newstead.; "The collection of netsuke comprises 1,708 pieces, listed as follows by Alfred Baur: 533 netsuke in ivory, 590 in wood, 28 in lacquer, 35 miscellaneous, 247 manju and 275 kagamibuta. This catalogue only illustrates 1,200 pieces of the 1,700 odd of the whole collection. We have therefore selected an ensemble of pieces that could be accomodated within the limits of a volume convenient to handle and consult. Of course all the excluded pieces have been photographed and are described in the inventory." excerpt from the introductory text by Marie-Thérèse Coullery.

It groups various series of lacquers, leaving aside pipe-cases. This catalogue, which only presents about a third of the objects in the inventory will I hope reflect as faithfully as possibly the totality of the collection: the numerical ratio of the different kinds of boxes (tea caddies, incense holders, writing boxes, inro, etc.) and of signed and unsigned pieces." excerpt from the introduction by Pierre F.Schneeberger (keeper of the Baur Collection).

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English and French text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 23.5 x 29.5 cm; 1.6 Kg; 52 pages of text plus 137 catalogue entries with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Limited edition of 1600 copies, of which this is marked as H.C. (one of the 50 copies… reserved for the collaborators); Used in very good condition, with minor signs of wear on the exterior of the dust jacket. The interior looks as new.;"Numerically the series of jades forms only a very small part, perhaps no more than two per cent, of the collections so lovingly assembled by Alfred Baur over almost half a century; in sentimental terms on the other hand this group of objects is far from insignificant, for it lay very close to the heart of the Swiss art lover. There is a telling instance connected with the reopening of the Musée Ariana-the Genevan museum which from 1938 has been exclusively devoted to ceramics. In May 1938 he was invited to enhance the lustre of the occasion by lending a part of his collections to the City; in reply he supplemented the splendid choice from his Far Eastern porcelains with almost his whole collection of jades. The Swiss public, otherwise but little acquainted with this type of "bibelot", as they were then still called, was thus given the opportunity of examining and admiring them over a period of some months. The jade collection is here augmented by a few hardstones (rock crystal, agate, cornelian); on the other hand the tobacco flasks, of which about sixty are of jade, have not been included and will be incorporated later in a special catalogue, for the Baur Collection contains more than five hundred examples of this group of small objects which has recently aroused renewed interest in the collecting world. The first jade was bought in England in 1920; the last arrived in Geneva in 1951, the year in which Alfred Baur died. The majority of the pieces were acquired over the thirty intervening years through the Japanese dealer-collector Kumasaku Tomita who procured the greater part of all the Baur Collection. They were bought either in Japan or, most frequently, in China, especially in Peking. A few pieces come from dealers in London or Geneva." excerpt from the introduction.

This art form, is known to have exerted a decisive influence on the development of Western painting, offering first to Impressionist painters and then to the Nabil (to mention only France) an example of a new type of compositions that can serve as an alternative to the grand tradition inherited from the Renaissance. Van Gogh and Monet had assembled collections of prints that are still very carefully preserved and the writer Edmond de Goncourt, himself a well-informed collector, had published two major studies with the help of the Japanese merchant Tadamasa Hayashi, one on Utamaro, the other on Hokusai. Matthi Forrer, the author of the present catalogue, deals exhaustively with the "floating world" and with the various aspects of the production of these pictures carved on wood, a good knowledge of which is so important for an appreciation of the Japanese print." excerpt from the introduction by Frank Dunand (keeper of the Baur Collection), 1994.

The laminated layer is slightly ungluing on spine. The outside text block shows some yellowing. Interior with some yellowing.; When the Baur Collection museum opened in 1964, few people were aware that this private museum housed one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics in Europe.; "In these last two volumes of the catalogue therefore our scope will be found limited almost entirely to wares produced during the reigns of K'ang Hsi (1662-1722), Yung Chêng (1723-1735), and Ch'in Lung (1736-1795). But few periods have been more prolific in invention: and to all lovers of Chinese porcelain these are familiar and evocative names calling to mind a succession of styles of unusual brilliance.(.) The present volume is devoted exclusively to the porcelains with monochrome glazes. (.) Their representation in the Baur Collection is one of quite exceptional richness and strengh. Shown here (with relatively few lacunae) is the full gamut of tones and colours that the 18th century potters of the Ching-tê-chên were able to devise, while some of the rarest and most prized effects are present in generous measure. Outstanding among the latter are the "peachbloom" pinks, pale "clair-de-lune" blues and much favoured soft celadon greens, the development of which seems to belong especially to the period about 1715-1745. This part of the collection may therefore be said to offer much of unusual value both to the student, and to the casual visitor." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1972.

Interior with minor yellowing.; When the Baur Collection museum opened in 1964, few people were aware that this private museum housed one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics in Europe.; "The last volume provided an apt demonstration of the new levels of refined workmanship achieved in the porcelain factories of Ching-tê- chên under the Ch'ing dynasty, as a result of the substantial reorganisation put in hand in the time of the K'ang Hsi Emperor (1662-1722). In the perfection of the white porcelain material, the smooth, clear lustre of its glaze and the close attention paid to every aspect of the throwing, finishing and firing of the ware the better products of this time leave nothing to be desired, and these standards were ably maintained down to the end of the 18th century, under the reigns of Yung Chêng (1723-35) and Ch'ien Lung (1736-95). As regards technical proficiency indeed the output of this time is superior to all but the highest levels of the Ming, whatever our preference may be in the matter of design. An outstanding feature of its production was the greatly-expanded range of single- colour glazes, and as we have seen, these are among the especial strengths of the Baur Collection. Yet despite the glorious achievement they represent we should not lose sight of the fact that just as under the Ming, wares with various types of painted decoration remained much the more numerous. The superior quality of the porcelain itself gave added encouragement to the talents of the painter, and whether the decoration was applied by the underglaze or overglaze technique the result was the same: fresh subtleties were elicited both in tonality, and in the varied exploitation of a given palette. The variety of these Ch'ing painted wares is indeed greater than anything we have met with before: this arises both from a diversification of styles, and from the fact that production was raised to unprecedented levels, in order to fulfil the demands of a vast and profitable export trade: thus the collector is faced with a very wide field of choice. In this instance the standard established over previous volumes is well maintained and the proportion of wares presumably made in the Imperial factory is again high, while at the same time most of the significant types of the period, including export wares, will be found represented. Prominent among them are the blue-and-white porcelains and of course those two celebrated families the famille verte and famille rose convenient terms still in wide use, the origin of which we owe to the writings of Albert Jacquemart in the mid-nineteenth century. They embrace a very much wider progeny than their titles at first sight suggest. These major groups are joined by those of the san-ts'ai, the tou-ts'ai, and other more novel combinations of existing ingredients especially as regards enamels, that were sometimes put to quite untraditional uses. Indeed it was in this direction perhaps that the genius of the Ch'ing dynasty flowed most freely and naturally in its search for characteristic expression." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1974.

He made a life-long collection of Far Eastern art, especially Chinese ceramics and jade, and Japanese porcelain, lacquer ware, netsuke, sword ornaments, prints and textiles. Shortly before he died in 1951, this Swiss connoisseur of Eastern art made over his collection to a foundation which bears his name. The collection is now on view in a Geneva townhouse.
