The content of this book was approved by him in 1978. The two series of discussions form an illuminating contrast: The 19…79 South American visit was Bion's third to Sao Paulo and fourth to Brazil; his method of presenting his subject was, therefore, fami-liar to those taking part. The visit to New York in 1977 was his first. It must be admitted that for those looking for cut-and-dried 'answers' Bion's method was inexplicable, frustrating and aggrava-ting. Here was a man, thoroughly conversant with his subject, exceptionally articulate and therefore well able to supply questioners with what they wanted to hear and he knew it. But he was steadfast in his respect for the truth and would not be persuaded against his better judgment to follow a course in which he could not respect himself. He believed that "La réponse est le malheur de la question"; both in his professional and private life problems stimulated in him thought and discussion-never answers. His replies-more correctly, counter-contributions were, in spite of their apparent irrelevance, an extension of the questions. His point of view is best illustrated in his own words: "I don't know the answers to these questions-I wouldn't tell you if I did. I think it is important to find out for yourselves" "I try to give you a chance to fill the gap left by me" "I don't think that my explanation matters. What I would draw attention to is the nature of the problem." The basic element is art produced through painting or drawing in the therapy sessions. The method was developed through therapeutic work with children and adolescents presenting with neurotic, psychotic and developmental disturbances. The method is based on Freuds main work, Traumdeutung (The Interpretation of Dreams); his method of free association and psychoanalysis; modified child-analysis and psychoanalytically oriented play therapy. There are several special problems connected with child psychotherapy: a) children prefer action to verbalization; b) they prefer externalizing to introspection when it comes to solving problems; c) the method of free association is not easily adapted to child analysis; d) many children have a low tolerance to the painful and anxiety-provoking effects of psychotherapy. Also, children do not often make their own decisions about beginning, continuing, or completing treatment. All of these factors are interrelated. By introducing play into the therapy situation, child therapists were able to overcome some of the difficulties mentioned above. Nevertheless, I have often found play therapy to be unsatisfactory because it lacks a medium that will ensure a continuous creative process. Although child analysis has some unfavourable aspects, it is not without advantages. A childs personality is developing all the time, problems have been allowed to influence the childs psychological structure for a limited time only, and the possible effects of problems on character development are thus less pronounced. The tendency to intellectualize is not as developed in children, leaving their feelings more accessible than in most adults. Their dreams in particular are less distorted by efforts to condense and displace issues, and consequently their latent dream wishes are easier to interpret (excerpt from the introduction).
