Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Presumed First Edition, First Printing. xxiv, 360 [2] pages. Cast of Characters, Illustrations. Map. Appendices. Bibliography. Includes paintings and drawings by the author. Dust jacket has a crease the runs from the front to the back. This is the memoir of Leo Saal's life beginning in Czarist Russia and continuing in Soviet Russia and Germany during the first half of the 20th century. It describes his childhood as part of the German cultural community of St. Petersburg, imprisonment and years in the Gulag, and the campaigns of World War II, first on the Russian and then on the German side of the conflict. Following WWII, Leo Saal literally "joined the circus" painting set designs and backdrops. The circus theme as a metaphor would continue in his work. Russian-born artist Leo Saal (1912-1996) was born in Petrograd (now Saint-Petersburg), Russia shortly before the Bolshevik Revolution. He endured three years in The Gulag, and was captured by Germany during WWII. He worked in the circus and theater and was trained in photography and filmmaking. He moved to Washington DC when he was invited to work for the CIA in 1953. Throughout all this, and over six decades, Saal managed to draw, sketch, do printmaking, make collages and paint - often inspired by early references to turn-of-the-century Russian paintings. Recurring themes were frequently related to European history, the circus metaphor, mother and child, and the beach. Saal was primarily self-taught and created thousands of pieces with strong influences from Beckman, Picasso, Manet, Feininger, Velasquez and Goya. Leo Saal was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1912 to a Russian-German family whose German branch came to Russia in the 1860's. He attended the St. Petri School there but was denied a university education because of his bourgeois background and learned photography and filmmaking. He was arrested in 1930 and again in 1933 when he was sent to labor camps for several years. After his release, he lived and worked illegally in Moscow with his first family. Unable to follow his main interest in drawing and painting, he worked as a construction supervisor on the Moscow-Volga Canal and as assistant to architect Aleksander Pasternak. Mobilized as a civilian construction worker during World War II, he found himself behind German lines and surrendered. For the rest of the war he worked in German military intelligence in a technical capacity. At the end of the war he made his living as a painter in Germany until his second marriage when he began work with the German-American intelligence community. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1953 where he continued to work in intelligence until his retirement in 1973 when he was able to devote himself to the painting career he had begun earlier. He worked as a painter and printmaker in the Washington, D.C. area until his death in 1996 shortly after publication of "Crossings." Marilyn Heilprin was born in New York City and has a B.A. from Smith College (1948) and M.A. in international relations from The American University (1963). A former research associate, writer and editor for federal agencies and private publishers, she attended writing workshops at Breadloaf, The American University, and Writers' Center in Bethesda, MD. She has published poems in literary journals and was a finalist in the Maryland State Poetry and Literary Society chapbook contests. She co-authored Leo Saal's memoir "Crossings: A Life in Russia and Germany in the First Half of the 20th Century." Marilyn Heilprin was a retired editor, writer and researcher who created one of the earliest compendiums of international statistics and organizations. Leo R. Saal (illustrator).

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In the year 2425, the opulent city of New Geneva towers above the squalid undercity known as the Dredges. Sixteen-year-old Elara Vayle, haunted by the loss of her parents in a mysterious explosion, is determined to escape her grim reality. Guided by her dying mother's last words, she stows away on the starship Aurora, hoping for a new beginning. But the ship is not just a vessel; it's a battleground of secrets, tensions, and hidden agendas. As Elara navigates her place among the crew-led by the formidable Captain Mira, who is more connected to Elara than she realizes-she confronts her deep-seated prejudices against the Imperial Dominion, the regime she blames for her past. With an AI companion named Pulse that holds the neural patterns of her father, Elara's journey uncovers a web of sabotage that threatens not only the Aurora but also her quest for identity and belonging. As loyalties are tested and lives hang in the balance, Elara must grapple with her rage and fear to protect her newfound family and discover what it truly means to fight for a brighter future.
