Bis um die Jahrtausendwende galt zudem die Vorgabe von 5-7-5 Silben. Davon haben sich allerdings die meisten deutschsprachigen Haijin entfernt. Sie weisen darauf hin, dass japanische Lauteinheiten alle gleich lang sind und weniger Information tragen als Silben in europäischen Sprachen. So hat Stockholm" zwei Silben, aber sechs Moren. 17 japanische Lauteinheiten entsprechen etwa dem Informationsgehalt von 1014 deutschen Silben. Deshalb hat es sich mittlerweile unter vielen Haiku-Schreibern europäischer Sprachen eingebürgert, ohne Verlust des inhaltlichen Gedankengangs oder des gezeigten Bildes mit weniger als 17 Silben auszukommen.
