Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This booklet contains hints to the solutions and answers where necessary, of the exercises contained in 'Intermediate Statistical Methods' by G. Barrie Wetherill. The following principles have been adopted in dealing with the answers. (1) In some cases the answer is the drawing of a graph, and this has been omitted. (2) In many numerical exercises a considerable amount of 'data snooping', plotting of residuals, etc. should follow the main ~sis. The inclusion of this material would make the answer booklet far too long. (3) In some cases there is a readily available reference from which the answer can be ob~ained, in which case reference has been made to this. It is not necessary to work through every exercise , but it should be recognised that the exercises are an integral part of the main text, and a comprehensive grasp of the subj ect cannot be obtained without attempting a substantial proportion of them. It is hoped that this booklet will be of assistance in pointing the way, and providing a check on the more vital calculations. The importance of numerical exercises should be stressed, and it is here that Appendix B is of importance. There is abundant material available there in many different fields of application. Currently we are in the process of mounting a form of Appendix B on a computer, together with accessing programs. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Seclusion as a concept is poorly understood and this is reflected in the literature on the topic, particularly from nursing authors. This has led to an emotionally charged altercation rather than academic debate, both within the literature and at conferences. But why bother learning about seclusion at all, particularly as it is used less and less within mental health? We would point out to those sceptical about the value of this book that seclusion is not only of interest as an intervention per se, but is valuable in reflecting a shifting ethos within care. For some reason, seclusion has been neglected; we believe that one reason is that it impinges upon widely held myths and beliefs within psychiatric practice. Questioning about seclusion uncovers uncomfortable facts and assumptions concerning the values underpinning today's mental health care approaches. Such uncomfortable questioning is often avoided for safer research pursuits. Also, we hold that this book is necessary in examining issues pertaining to seclusion practice. There is a gap within nursing knowledge in so far as seclusion is concerned, as our chapter on education upholds. Yet inquiries and litigation have highlighted the fact that seclusion practice must be more clearly understood as an intervention. At present, such understanding is erratic and far from useful in providing a higher standard of care. Practitioners need to make informed decisions regarding seclu sion, and this book aims to provide the necessary information on which to base these decisions. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be invited to contribute a foreword to this book, which deserves - and needs - to be read by virtually everyone who is concerned with the treatment and subse quent welfare of the victims of severe injuries of the brain. Some friends, relatives and workmates might be helped by reading some parts of it, but, if the book has the effect it deserves to have on therapists, nurses, doctors, and others working in both hospitals and the community, these laymen will be suitably informed and assisted by one or more members of the necessarily large therapeutic team. The improvements in methods of resuscitation that have taken place during the last 40 years or so have abolished the previously fatalistic readiness to accept that a week or two in coma after a head injury was virtually a sentence to death from pneumonia. After it had become possible to save lives it gradually became clear that survival of the patient was not necessarily followed by recovery of the brain and that the price of success, in saving lives, was a popula tion of cerebral cripples that was increasing at the rate of 1000 or more a year throughout the country. Although this figure has remained about the same for more than 20 years, there has been a great improvement in the amount of interest, the standard of care and the quality of results that are being achieved. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. This book aims to demonstrate that legal complaints form the background for making business decisions and in the text legal principles are grouped according to their relevance to business. After surveying the sources of law, the court system and out of court settlements (where most legal disputes are resolved), the authors discuss the legal forms which a business can take, employment legislation, health and safety regulations, the sale of goods, product liability, constraints on advertising and insurance. Certain topics for example ways of protecting innovative ideas (patents, trademarks, designs), are discussed in more detail than is usual at this level. The role of trade and consumer associations, the Data Protection Act 1984 and the supply of credit are among other subjects examined. At the end of each chapter there are suggestions for further reading. and these references include not only academic texts, cases and statutes, but practical (and sometimes free) guides issued by, for example, trade associations, government departments, banks and the Equal Opportunities Commission. Case studies have been given in all chapters to illustrate the themes under discussion, sometimes with the addition of contemporary newspaper cuttings. Questions for discussion and problems for further consideration are given at the end of each chapter. Written for students following courses in business and management at degree level or equivalent, it will also be useful to students on BTEC Higher courses, post-experience or post-graduate management courses and professional courses in, for example, accountancy or marketing. This book is one of six titles in the Business in Context series which aims to provide business-centred, rather than discipline centred, coverage of the main subjects currently associated with a wide range of business studies programmes. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Stress is a feature of all of our lives. The business of working in the health professions means that we are constantly being exposed to stress. That stress can sometimes be enriching and motivating. It has often been pointed out that stress can be positive or nega tive. When stress is positive, it rarely needs any further attention. When it is negative, it is a problem. The first aim of this book is to discuss the various sorts of stress that may be experienced by a variety of health professionals, including social workers, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occu pational therapists and others. What they all have in common is that they work closely with other people - people who often have emotional problems or problems in living. Working with other people who are troubled in this way is indeed stressful. For too long it has been assumed that health professionals should 'get on with it' and put up with any stress that is involved in caring for others. The second aim of this book is to offer practical ways of coping with negative stress. These methods range from simple relaxation techniques, through meditation to methods that involve discussing stress with others: counselling, co-counselling and group work. All the methods described in this book have been used with a variety of health professionals, and not all of these methods will necessarily appeal to you. One of the fundamental points about stress is that it tends to affect each individual idiosyncratically. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In the early years of this century a syndrome manifested by perceptuo-motor difficulties was described. During succeeding years further references were made to such a syndrome. In the first half of this century, however, children who suffered from such difficulties received little acknowledgement of their problems; few were neurologically assessed or offered remedia tion. Many school teachers were unaware of the existence of such problems and so were unable to make allowances for the gross and fine motor difficulties and perceptual problems encountered by some pupils during the course of the school day. Although many of these children were of average, and some of above average, ability, they were regarded as having little academic potential. Some were regarded as being 'educationally subnormal', a term applied at that time, because of perceptual problems which impaired reading ability and motor difficulties which affected their handwriting. It was not until the 1960s that interest in the difficulties experienced by these children began to gather momentum. Paediatricians, therapists, teachers and psychologists became involved in research, assessment and treatment. Children began to be handled more sympathetically in school. Parents learned of the existence of such difficulties and sought help for their affected children. Today medics, paramedics and educationalists are consulting each other, sharing knowledge and expertise to the advantage of children with perceptuo motor difficulties. Some problems resolve with maturity, though a proportion of these children have difficulties which persist into adolescence. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book is intended for students of medicine, pharmacy and other biological disciplines, who want to have a working knowledge of the mechanisms of action, uses and adverse effects of drugs which modify the activity of neurotransmitters in the peripheral and central nervous systems. It is suitable for undergraduates and for post-graduates on taught higher degree courses and diplomas. New information and concepts have been incorporated into the text as appropriate, and references have been updated. Excitatoryand inhibitory amino acids are considered in two chapters, and the last chapter of the first two editions (which considered drugs which do not interact selectively with neurotransmitters) has been subsumed into other sections. The third edition follows the tried format of previous editions. Following a chapter which introduces the biology and pharmacology of neurotransmission, subsequent chapters deal with synthesis, storage, release, receptors and inactivation of individual neurotransmitters, together with a consideration of therapeutic uses and mechanisms of adverse effects. Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Survey and study background In an effort to gain some answers on the 1ST capital investment (project selection) decision criteria used in practice, a survey was undertaken in 1990 of 80 American, British, Australian and New Zealand companies. A one-page survey form was used that provided 15 possible 1ST investment criteria, a means of indicating whether they are used or not, the percentage of projects to which each criterion is applied, and an overall ranking in terms of total project value for each criterion. The criteria are shown in Table 2.1. The criteria are categorized into financial, management, and development criteria. They were developed, first, through interviews with some 20 chief information officers (CIOs) in Britain and the United States. These CIOs were questioned on what criteria their organizations use in selecting 1ST investment projects, with the aim of developing a full list of the criteria used in practice. Secondly, the criteria and the form were tested and refined in a pilot study with some 12 companies. The criteria used in the survey and listed in Table 2.1 are primary level criteria. Paperback. Zustand: Fair. It is now twelve years since Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents appeared. Since the publication of that monograph the subject has expanded rapidly as the unique potential of surfactants has become known to a wider circle of scientists. In a recent review Menger (Accounts of Chemical Research, 12 (1979) 111) estimated that since 1970 there have been over 2800 publications on micelles and micellization alone. The topic of catalysis in micellar media was in an early stage of development in 1968 but the growth in this subject has given rise to an excellent textbook by Fendler and Fendler. We have felt for some time that a revision of Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents was overdue. The book has been out of print for some time. Owing to pressure of other work, Professor P. H. Elworthy and Dr C. B. Macfarlane were unable to undertake the work of revision but while working together on an undergraduate textbook the present authors decided to set to work, realizing both the impossibility of producing a comprehensive textbook and the need to alter the scope of the book. Micellar solubilization occurs over a relatively small surfactant concentration range; because of this and because the phenomenon is never observed in isolation, we have extended the text to include surface activity, emulsions and suspensions and, as our emphasis is on formulation of medicinal products, to the of the toxicology of surface-active agents. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The choice of the method of contraception is not an easy matter. Failure may arise from using the wrong methods for individual partners. The editors and contributors to this book use the body and mind approach held by doctors who are members of the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine, addressing the emotional and psychological factors in family planning. The issues addressed include: the unconsicous factors in contraceptive care; care of the younger patient; the man and the method; the sexual needs of people with disability; cultural perceptions and misconceptions; sterilization; and psychosexual problems in the contraceptive consultation. Guidance is given for the family planning consultation based on models. Doctors, midwives and nurses should find this approach to contraception both rewarding and efficient. The skills required to practice good contraceptive care involve an understanding of sexual feelings and personality. This book aims to provide the framework for the acquisition of skills for the practitioner. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. It also aims to give information about the wide range of multidisciplinary and special ist professionals who can contribute in this field. BACKGROUND The ancient Greek word for drug has three meanings: a cure or remedy, a poison and a magical charm. This book will consider these meanings in the modern sense: drugs as medication and as a solution to problems; drugs as dangerous to health; and drugs as magical and hedonistic. In the recent past, policy and practice guidelines have often been based on a misunderstanding of the diversity and complexity of drug misuse. Professionals have confused different types of drug misuse and/ or attempted to compress all types into one narrowly defined cate gory, i.e. all drugs are good or bad. This is the first mistake: it is prefer able to go right back to the ancient Greeks and try to understand the range of different effects of drugs on different people. Practitioners first of all need to understand the complexity of drug misuse in order to develop realistic concepts and construct useful cate gories for assessment. After this, they are in a position to identify clearly the main risks and problems in the different categories and so to deter mine which type of intervention is most appropriate. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book was written for first and second year undergraduates in electronic engineering and the physical sciences with the aim of providing a firm grounding in the study of signals and systems. In this second edition the authors provide a more detailed treatment of the z-transform. A new chapter serves to review and integrate much of the earlier material, while introducing the discrete Fourier transform in the context of signal capture and spectral analysis. These changes reflect the growing important of discrete-time topics in undergraduate studies and the fact that many students now have direct experience in the use and application of signal-processing software. Emphasis is placed on discussion rather than on detailed mathematical proofs, with the aim of developing and encouraging a critical approach to the use of software tools. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Time-series analysis is an area of statistics which is of particular interest at the present time. Time series arise in many different areas, ranging from marketing to oceanography, and the analysis of such series raises many problems of both a theoretical and practical nature. I first became interested in the subject as a postgraduate student at Imperial College, when I attended a stimulating course of lectures on time-series given by Dr. (now Professor) G. M. Jenkins. The subject has fascinated me ever since. Several books have been written on theoretical aspects of time-series analysis. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the subject which bridges the gap between theory and practice. The book has also been written to make what is rather a difficult subject as understandable as possible. Enough theory is given to introduce the concepts of time-series analysis and to make the book mathematically interesting. In addition, practical problems are considered so as to help the reader tackle the analysis of real data. The book assumes a knowledge of basic probability theory and elementary statistical inference (see Appendix III). The book can be used as a text for an undergraduate or postgraduate course in time-series, or it can be used for self tuition by research workers. Throughout the book, references are usually given to recent readily accessible books and journals rather than to the original attributive references. Wold's (1965) bibliography contains many time series references published before 1959. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. People can grieve not just from the death of a loved one, but from a wider arena of loss which includes divorce, moving away, missing friends and even losing a valuable or sentimental possession. This book defines unresolved grief and then explores the process of therapy. Through descriptive cases, John Gunzburg examines how people can use their own resources to resolve grief and loss. Many examples are given of how the therapist and client can use their creativity, working together to resolve grief. Options and directions for the future aim to leave the reader optimistic and with skills to realize this positive view. Unresolved Grief is written for therapists of all disciplines who are dealing with grieving clients. It promotes an effective therapy of unresolved grief though numerous case studies, clear discussion of the material and creative exercises aimed at encouraging readers to examine their oun casework. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
