Paperback. Zustand: Good. This book provides a thoroughly edited text of Antonio Machado's Campos de Castilla, one of twentieth-century Spain's best-loved volumes of poetry. An extensive Introduction offers an in-depth commentary on his themes, techniques and metaphysical manner. In addition to examining the various influences on his work - Krausism, Bergsonism and the '98 Generation's concern for el problema de Espana - the Introduction looks closely at Machado's life, especially the years of compisition, 1907-1917, and it traces the critical phases in his poetic development: the discovery of the Castilian landscape in Soria, his growing political consciousness, his personal tragedy as a bereaved husband, his existential meditations in Baeza. Annotations in the form of Endnotes provide additional factual information and clarify points of difficulty in the text.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. The thoughts expressed in this book are meant by Rudolf Steiner to contain the fundamental elements that he observed in Goethe's worldview. There was a particular appeal for Steiner in observing what nature reveals of its being and laws as perceived by Goethe's refined organs of sense and spirit. He came to understand how Goethe experienced such revelations as good fortune and happiness so great that he sometimes valued them over his poetic gift. Rudolf Steiner lived into the feelings that passed through Goethe's soul when he said: Nothing motivates us so much to think about ourselves as when, after a long interval, we finally see again objects of the highest significance, scenes of nature with particularly decisive characteristics, and compare the impression remaining from the past with the present effect. We will then notice by and large that the object emerges more and more, that, while we earlier experienced joy and suffering in our encounter with the objects and projected our happiness and perplexity onto them, we now, with egoism tamed, grant them their rightful due, which is that we recognize their particularities and learn to value their characteristics more highly by thus living into them. The artistic eye yields the first kind of contemplation; the second kind is suited to the researcher of nature; and I had to count myself, although at first not without pain, still in the end fortunate that, as the first kind of sense threatened to leave me by and by, the second kind developed all the more powerfully in eye and spirit. -- GoetheThis volume is a translation from German of the written work>Goethes Weltanschauung (GA 6).…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. El Caballero de Olmedo is a history play, a retelling of a folk talk, a celebrated piece of Golden Age drama, and also an intense mediation upon the power of desire, the deceits of eroticism and literary convention, the injustice of a world obsessed with appearance, and the tragic potential inherent in the courting of beautiful women. The introduction sets this play within the context of Baroque eroticism and sexual mores as well as dramatic practice. The text is presented with glosses to words unfamiliar to undergraduate students; the notes comprise summaries of acts and scenes from a dramatic point of view, and in-depth notes to problematic passages in the text, written with an undergraduate readership in mind.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. First published as a serial in the newspaper El Paso del Norte, in October and November of 1915, then as a book published by the same newspaper, the novel Los de abajo has been translated into all the main languages of the world. Mariano Azuela's masterwork came out one hundred years after Jose Loaquin Fernandez de Lazardi's El Periquillo Sarniento created the genre of the Novel of the Revolution, as it left behind the norms of the European novel and forged new parameters for Hispanic American fiction. The impact of Los de abajo is owed in large part to the sustained dramatic tension of the novel, from the opening scene to the death of the protagonist - in the same geographic location, creating a sense of circularity - but its success is partly the result of the fulfillment of the title's promise to depict the underdogs. Who are the underdogs but those at the bottom of the social and economic ladder, that is, the poorest and most disinherited. And the underdogs in Azuela's story have decided to fight against the injustices perpetrated by those on top. The struggle is bloody, the suffering intolerable. And all for what? All just in order to remain in the same place - as underdogs - after two years of hardships. This attitude of defeat, of failure, is one of the elements that sustain lively interest in the novel and give it permanent value. The descriptions of nature serve to soften the violent revolutionary scenes, and it is this technique of interweaving human actions with descriptions of the landscape that confers an unusual equilibrium upon the novel and has caused it to be considered the best of the many novels about the Mexican Revolution. This edition, annotated and with a prologue by Luis Leal, is a fundamental text for any course in Hispanic literature, and is indispensable for courses focusing on early 20th century Latin America.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Two French missionaries -- Jean Marie Latour and Joseph Vaillant -- make their way into the harsh, unexplored, mountainous region of New Mexico in the hope of revivifying there the religion that had been brought by Spanish priests and then left to decay in the hand of an insubordinate and materilistic clergy. Father Latour, first bishop of the diosese, knew how to win the confidence of the Indians and to become a father of the Indians and to become a father indeed to the Mexicans. Slowly and firmly he gained control of the padres of the region, gradually replacing the slothful with men stamped by his own ardor. The cathedral that he built in Santa Fe, using the stones of the region so that it might fit into its surroundings, was the crown of his missionary labor, in which he had succeeded in harmonizing two elements: the Catholic religion and the New Mexican way of life.…
