Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. First Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a well-worn copy, with considerable wear to edges and corners (fraying of cloth, exposure of boards, etc.), soiling/staining to edges of text block; a reading copy of a very uncommon book]. "Red Lacey is unique," proclaims the jacket blurb. "Once in a generation a fiction character is born." Yeah, it's only a facsimile dust jacket, but you'll be glad you have it, because it's an absolute hoot: it goes on to laud this newly-minted character as having "that indefinable something which immediately sets him apart and endears him to the hearts of the reading public," and to evoke his notable predecessors -- Sherlock Holmes, Philo Vance, and Craig Kennedy. More: he's "cocky, fearless, egoistic and red-headed. . As active as a caged tiger. As unscrupulous as a bucket shot [sic] operator. As honorable, in the light of his code, as any mitred bishop. As merciless as a black panther." You get the idea, but here's the real howler: "As modern as the airship Hindenburg." !!! (For the record, the book was published in November 1936, and the Hindenburg crashed and burned in May 1937.) The title page proclaims the book as "A Red Lacey Detective Novel," but it's actually only a sort-of novel, consisting of four individual stories, all of which had been previously published in the pulp magazine "Popular Detective," which kind of flow together, narratively. There may well have been other Red Lacey stories, as the author was a prolific contributor to the pulps, beginning in 1929; his pulp-story credits, however, don't seem to extend beyond 1937, which was the same year he "went Hollywood," subsequently piling up more than sixty film and TV credits through 1963. At any rate, despite the extravagant predictions of the enthusiastic jacket-blurb writer, this was the first, last, and only time that any of Bruce's work made it between hard covers. (There was, however, a British edition issued the following year.) The publisher of this volume seems to have vanished from the scene after 1936 as well; all titles I've been able to identify with them were published that year. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.
