This is a unique book which for the first time offers walkers a guide to a superb 30-mile circuit of the whole of Lake Windermere, which can also be done in four or five easy stages. Keen (but not hardcore!) walker, Duncan Turner spends a great deal of time (he is retired) in Windermere, and looked long and hard for a book laying out a complete route around the lake. Having failed to find one in the local shops, he decided to research and write one himself, something which he has enjoyed doing immensely. From the outset, he decided that all the proceeds would go to New Holehird, the Leonard Cheshire home for adults with physical disabilities, situated on the shores of the lake. This is typical of Duncan, who works very hard to raise money for a range of charities (including Children of Chenobyl, which benefited from the sale of a previous book, and for whom he plays host to two children in his home every summer). Beautifully produced with colour photographs, this handy, pocket-sized book is sure to be a hit with the millions of visitors to the town and lake of Windermere. The city of Sheffield has long been synonymous with cutlery and steel, and most previous books have understandably concentrated on the momentous changes which industrialisation wrought on the area over the last two hundred years. The figures are astonishing: as early as the seventeenth century three out of every five men in the town worked in one branch or another of the cutlery trades and, in all, Sheffield had a smithy to every 2.2 houses; a hundred years later there were as many as six watermills per mile on rivers such as the Don, Porter and Rivelin, driving a wide range of industrial machinery and processes; local innovations included Old Sheffield Plate, crucible steel and stainless steel; during the mid-nineteenth century 60 per cent of all British cutlers worked in the Sheffield area, and the region manufactured 90 per cent of British steel, and nearly half the entire European output; small, specialised workshops producing a wide range of goods such as edge-tools and cutlery existed side by side with enormous steel factories (it has been estimated that in 1871 Brown's and Cammell's alone exported to the United States about three times more than the whole American output). Yet, as David Hey shows, the city's history goes back way beyond this. Occupying a commanding position on Wincobank, high above the River Don, are the substantial remains of an Iron Age hillfort, built to defend the local population. Celts, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons came and left a legacy recalled in many local names. By the twelfth century William de Lovetot had built a castle at the confluence of the Don and the Sheaf, and it is likely that is was he who founded the town of Sheffield alongside his residence. A century later can be found the first reference to a Sheffield cutler, so industry in the area can be said to be at least 700 years old, and no doubt stretches back even further. Highly respected local historian David Hey has written a fine, up-to-date history of Sheffield. His excellent text is now complemented by over 300 illustrations, many in colour. This unique book is a real treat of a tale, telling of life, work and general tomfoolery in the running of a small-scale holiday business in Blackpool during the forties and fifties. Ivy House Holiday Camp ran on a mixture of hard graft, innovation, optimism and old fashioned customer service, all with the personal touch. They snooped on Butlin's at Skegness for ideas about chalet building and general layout, but their aim was always to offer a less frenetic, more easy going holiday. The entertainment was organised by Bertha's 'cheerful prankster' husband Fred, who used his considerable charm to build contacts with famous names such as Violet Carson and Mary Hopkin, as well as becoming involved with the Miss Blackpool contests. There were themed show nights, Hi-de-Hi!-style all-round performers and trips to Blackpool, the Winter Gardens and even, unusually for holiday camps at the time, the Lake District. Visitors came back year after year and new business came primarily from word-of-mouth advertising. Vividness and good humour permeate this invaluable record of the sort of enterprise about which historians and others would know very little were it not for reminiscences like Bertha's. On a perfect summer's day in August 1819 - as a faint breeze cooled the heat of the noonday sun and gently lifted the flags to display their mottoes and emblems - a huge crowd, mainly of working people, gathered on St. Peter's Field in Manchester to discuss parliamentary reform under the chairmanship of Henry Hunt Esq., a leading advocate of universal suffrage. Conspicuously present at the meeting were women, the breeze dishevelling their long hair as they enthusiastically doffed their hats to cheer. Before the proceedings could begin, however, the crowd was savagely dispersed, the work of cavalrymen charging with drawn and recently sharpened sabres, backed up by the truncheons of the constabulary and the bayonets of the infantry. The outcome was the injury of 654 persons, including the deaths of at least 17, and the seizure and destruction of nearly all the reformers' flags and caps of liberty. Among the casualties women figured prominently, most of them wounded by sabres, bayonets, truncheons and horses' hooves, rather than simply injured in the crush of the crowd. Eight surviving casualty lists offer detailed information about the victims and their attackers, and allow the first truly objective assessment of the day's events. In this important new study, Professor Michael Bush analyses these lists in order to determine the true scale and nature of the atrocity, concluding that the epithet 'massacre' is fully justified. The lists also provide fascinating personal information about the reformers, including the many women who took part and who suffered disproportionately at the hands of the military and police. Digging deep into the archives of newspapers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the author has unearthed a wealth of information about the county's dance musicians. During this period, most villages had their own dance bands - referred to as string bands - which played a huge part in the social lives of their respective communities. Although band members were mainly men, many bands did also include women and child musicians, as the wonderful pictures in this book show. These black and white snapshots are complemented by old adverts for the performances in venues right across the region.
