We are told that his corpse bled when she touched it.and Jennet was convicted of witchcraft. Was there really a satanic coven on Pendle side? Or was Jennet framed by Lister's son? And were the other 'witches' actually caught up in a much broader and more disturbing pattern of religious persecution? Jonathan Lumby presents a remarkable series of new insights. By placing the events in their wider European context, he explains far more satisfactorily than ever before exactly why these disturbing events occurred. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. An up-to-date and in-depth historical study of the northern Roman frontier in Britain - why was the military conquest of Scotland never completed and what were the criteria governing Roman policy over the centuries? The idea of the Roman frontier immediately conjures up pictures of Hadrian's Wall with its forts and other remains, and of the Antonine Wall in Scotland. These two structures, however, represent two elements in a story which took a great deal longer to evolve and which, if taken in isolation, tend to mask a clear appraisal of the way in which the frontier in Britain actually developed. What, after all, did the Romans want to achieve in Britain? Why did they not capitalise on Agricola's victory at Mons Graupius in AD83 to subdue the entire country once and for all? How did the idea for a physical barrier evolve? And why, after all the effort of building Hadrian's Wall, did the emperor Antoninus Pius embark upon fresh conquest in Scotland? This book is intended primarily as an historical treatment of the Roman military occupation in Britain up until the early third century AD, although it does also describe the later history of the frontier zone. It draws upon archaeological evidence, but is not intended as a guide to the remains of Hadrian's and Antonine's Walls. Rather, it aims to set these spectacular fortifications into the broader context of Roman military plans. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. The first full history of Bristol for two generations, this beautiful book tells the story of one of the most important maritime cities in the UK. Certain to appeal to Bristolians the world over. It was a thousand years ago that a simple wooden bridge provided a crossing over the Avon, at a place known as the `Bridge Place'. Only 200 years later Bristol had become the largest and most prosperous town in the West of England, and it subsequently grew to become the second city in the kingdom. Anybody who has ever tried to understand Bristol's long and turbulent history will know that the number of books on the shelf is so bewildering, and the books so specialised, that there is simply no place for the beginner to start! Peter Aughton's book solves this problem. Many excellent and detailed specialised studies have been published in the last fifty years but this is the first full history of Bristol to appear in two generations. The influence and history of Bristol extend well beyond her neighbourhood. The city played a major part in the discovery and colonisation of America; she has been a great centre of industry; as well as being one of the world's leading mercantile ports. She still retains a strong nautical atmosphere and the old-world charm of an ancient English city. The range of the book is very wide, but the reader will still find much which is new in the text. Most of Bristol's previous historians, for instance, have shied away from analysing the true impact of the slave trade, but here it is given a chapter in its correct context as a critical part of eighteenth-century Bristol. The author brings the railway, the steamship and the development of the docks into the narrative as an essential part of Bristol's Victorian development. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. On a perfect summer's day in August 1819 - as a faint breeze cooled the heat of the noonday sun and gently lifted the flags to display their mottoes and emblems - a huge crowd, mainly of working people, gathered on St. Peter's Field in Manchester to discuss parliamentary reform under the chairmanship of Henry Hunt Esq., a leading advocate of universal suffrage. Conspicuously present at the meeting were women, the breeze dishevelling their long hair as they enthusiastically doffed their hats to cheer. Before the proceedings could begin, however, the crowd was savagely dispersed, the work of cavalrymen charging with drawn and recently sharpened sabres, backed up by the truncheons of the constabulary and the bayonets of the infantry. The outcome was the injury of 654 persons, including the deaths of at least 17, and the seizure and destruction of nearly all the reformers' flags and caps of liberty. Among the casualties women figured prominently, most of them wounded by sabres, bayonets, truncheons and horses' hooves, rather than simply injured in the crush of the crowd. Eight surviving casualty lists offer detailed information about the victims and their attackers, and allow the first truly objective assessment of the day's events. In this important new study, Professor Michael Bush analyses these lists in order to determine the true scale and nature of the atrocity, concluding that the epithet 'massacre' is fully justified. The lists also provide fascinating personal information about the reformers, including the many women who took part and who suffered disproportionately at the hands of the military and police. Michael Bush provides detailed listings of every known casualty - a most useful tool for genealogists as well as local historians - and draws highly significant new conclusions that will resonate loudly with all those interested in Britain's slow and painful march towards political democracy. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'Local history is frequently the nursery for ideas that are developed on the national stage, its seeds are germinated into the lawns of history.' Interest in local history has never been greater. For professional and amateur alike, in the context of the local experience the past becomes real and immediate, and the experience of individuals, families and communities emerges from our research. With a wealth of primary and secondary source material to be exploited, the opportunities for investigation and analysis are within everyone's reach. But how do we find our evidence and convert our initial ideas, via research and writing, into a reasoned and convincing account of our theme or subject in local history? This invaluable book, written by one of our most eminent and experienced local historians, provides clear, wise and always practical advice about the process of research and writing. It gives essential guidance on a wide range of key topics: finding sources; transcribing, analysing and interpreting evidence; the writing process; historical perspectives and methods; and ways to present and publish the finished product. Examples of sources, writing styles and approaches, and worked exercises guide the reader and help to develop a sound discipline of research and writing. Researching and writing history: a guide for local historians is aimed at those who enjoy local history but want to develop their own investigations in the subject, perhaps leading to publication. It will also be welcomed by students on local history courses who want authoritative guidance on the preparation of dissertations and theses. Written with humour and understanding, and attractively illustrated, it is also an enjoyable and fascinating introduction to the subject itself. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. In recent years, field sports of all descriptions including even angling, have fallen foul of an energetically evangelised official ideology. Despite this, field sports remain an important part of the lives of a significant portion of the population. The author examines the place of field sports historically and socially, relying heavily on secondary sources. Somewhat implausibly, Hoyle maintains that this book is "surprisingly, perhaps, .the first attempt to offer a proper historical perspective on the subject of field sports in England." This probably hangs on the author's interpretation of the word "proper". An interesting read containing contributions from many authors, with much useful material and an extensive and useful bibliography. Chapters include: Field sports as history; Royalty and the diversity of field sports, c1840-1981; Sport and the survival of landed society in late victorian Suffolk; The shooting party - the associational cultures of rural and urban elites; Wildfowling, its evolution as a sporting activity; 'A delightful sport with peculiar claims' - the specificities of otter hunting, 1850-1939; Science, sport and the otter, 1945-1978; the development of salmon angling in the nineteenth century; Starting a hare - exploring the history of coursing since the mid-nineteenth century; Foxhunting and the Yeomanry - county identity and military culture; The fortunes of English foxhunting in the twentieth century - the case of the Oakley Hunt. Mike Clarke lived on the canal for 5 years, and his knowledge and in-depth understanding of the subject have led him to produce a wonderful book. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is England's longest and arguably most successful canal. Originally conceived as a way for Bradford merchants to reach the rapidly expanding port of Liverpool, it was begun in 1770 from both ends simultaneously, and was finally completed only in 1816. The canal runs through or near some of the most significant industrial towns of the North - Liverpool, Wigan, Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Bradford and Leeds - and for many years carried a large proportion of the goods that fuelled the industrial development of the entire region. Much more than a series of viewpoints, this is a limestone landscape worth looking into closely. Cunswick Scar and Scout Scar are sites of special scientific interest and of European importance for wildlife. The National Trust locations of Helsington Barrows and Brigsteer Park are habitats offering a rich diversity of birds, butterflies and flora. The Lyth Valley, between Scout Scar and Whitbarrow, is a different geology and a contrasting landscape. In the tradition of nature writing, "About Scout Scar" is a detailed portrait of a landscape. It is about the thrill of making discoveries through the seasons: of looking, listening, seeing. The theme of how we relate to the natural world is at the heart of it. Farming and conservation are integral, and underpinning this book are the voices of the custodians of this landscape. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Until the publication of the first edition of Dr John A. Hargreaves's acclaimed history of Halifax in 1999, no full-length history of the town had been published, explaining the complex process by which 'a few straggling tenements built of wood, wattles and thatch' in the late medieval period developed into 'a town of a hundred trades' by the late Victorian era, and then became in the twentieth century the home of one of the largest UK financial institutions. This book explores the transformation of Halifax from a remote Pennine settlement into a thriving commercial centre. The author asks how, when and why did such a transformation occur. Was it the product of the major economic and social changes which the town experienced from the late eighteenth century? Or was it stimulated by an earlier phase of commercial expansion before the Industrial Revolution? How did geography and environment shape Halifax's urban growth? How did the experience of rapid industrial expansion followed by dramatic decline affect the development of the town? Perhaps most importantly, he considers how the experience of history has impacted upon the lives of those who live in Halifax today. Enthusiastically welcomed by both professional historians and the general reader, for its lively, engaging style and authoritative treatment of its subject, the first edition of this new history of Halifax quickly went out of print. Now fully revised to take account of Halifax's continuing development in the twenty-first century, the vastly augmented text has been supplemented by many additional illustrations. Essential and fascinating reading for historians, and for `tykes' everywhere. This story of a forgotten and largely unknown industry is the first survey of all the cotton mills which were built in Yorkshire during those critical years between 1780 and 1835. The new mills, their location, machinery and the firms which ran them are all described. Photographs and drawings illustrate the story and Part II of the book is a gazetteer of all the mill sites. This comprehensive study of a little-known industry will be of value to economic and local historians. It will also be of interest to people who love to walk the cloughs of Calderdale or the Yorkshire Dales and want to know more about their history. It was to be the beginning of an organisation which for the last 200 years has appealed to the best in people, treated them as capable of exercising responsibility, and empowered them to face the challenges of life. All the principles and practices of Oddfellowship developed from these core values, which still characterise the Society today. The story of the last two centuries, including many dramatic changes, is chronicled in this well-researched, readable and lively history, lavishly illustrated with many wonderful photographs, documents and commemorative memorabilia. And, as befits a Society which values its members so highly, there are also contributions from present-day Oddfellows, whose memories and recollections have been passed down through families over generations. This wonderful book vividly portrays the life of the Oddfellows since its birth and is certain to fascinate all current Society members, for whom it will be a treasured keepsake. It is also, however, a valuable and interesting resource for historians, those connected with the study of friendly societies, and anyone interested in British social history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
