Life on the Pennines or the North York Moors has always been very different from life in low-lying agricultural districts such as Holderness or the Humberhead Levels. In many ways, the farmers of the Vale of York have had more in common with those the Midland Plain than with the miners, steel workers and textile workers of their own county. Until relatively recently people felt that they belonged to their own parish and to a wider neighbourhood which was bounded by the nearest market towns and which they called their 'country'. Relatively few people travelled to other parts of Yorkshire or had any contact with the 'strangers' who lived beyond their own district. Although the Elizabethan and Stuart gentry were conscious of belonging to Yorkshire, and outsiders made comments (usually adverse) on Yorkshiremen as a breed apart, ordinary folk did not have this sense of belonging to Yorkshire until quite late in its history. The success of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club from the 1890s onwards seems to have been the great stimulus that united Yorkshire people, and which gave them a sense of their superiority. The history of Yorkshire is more varied than that of any other English county. The changing fortunes of the many different regions of the county - from Pennine moors and valley towns to the flats of Holderness; from industrialised cities to quiet market towns - are a major theme in this important new book. Outsiders may recognise a Yorkshire accent, but local people can place a speaker much more precisely in a particular 'country'. Endowed with a commanding physical presence and inestimable gifts, Soper, following his ordination in 1929, enjoyed a gilded path to prominence, becoming Superintendent of the West London Mission in 1936, President of the Methodist Conference in 1953, Alderman of the London County Council in 1958 and the first Nonconformist minister to be appointed to the House of Lords in 1965. He was also a consummate media performer, a prolific columnist for "Tribune" and, arguably, the greatest open-air evangelist since John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.From his various stamping-grounds at Tower Hill and Speakers' Corner as well as the television studio, Soper was adept at attracting public attention and ensuring the Church a voice on all contemporary matters, yet his descent into the political arena came at a cost. His fervent pacifist convictions saw him banned from broadcasting during the Second World War, while his maverick personality and unorthodox beliefs made him a divisive figure within the Methodist Church. Even within the Labour Party, Soper remained something of an outsider, his refusal to compromise keeping him at arm's length from the leadership. By the time of his death, Donald Soper seemed a throwback to a bygone age, victim of secular forces and market economics.And yet for all Soper's disappointments in later years, it would be wrong to dismiss his career as a failure. Though the chronic living conditions were being tackled through widespread slum clearance, for some the pressures of poverty, unemployment, post-war trauma and uncertainty took their toll. Many of the cases in this collection of murders in 1920s Merseyside show all too clearly how bleak life could be, how little hope those involved had. But while we can feel pity for some of the people we meet in these accounts, murder is murder and most paid the ultimate penalty.
