Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Carol Corsa always looks forward to taking Mrs Townsend fruit picking, but one day the trip is very nearly ruined when an angry tractor crashed into her in a narrow country lane. Luckily, the only thing damaged is one of the baskets of fruit on her back seat, and the driver of the tractor is so kind and helpful that Carol even manages to forgive his spiteful vehicle. Later Carol is delighted to find herself being joined by a new friend, Mickey Morgan, and looks forwards to new adventures. Four stories complete this first volume, filling in details of Carol's and Mickey's life with their owners the Townsends, and describing some of their adventures. Many of the incidents are based on events in the author's own life, giving an authentic flavour to the stories. The setting in Worcestershire is realistic, too, being the area in which Claire Rosemary Jane grew up. Parents and children alike will be attracted to these stories, in which the cars have characters of their own and can talk to each other, though not to humans - an unusual slant on a familiar type of book. Like the Rev. Awdrey's tales, these are morally sound, though the points are unstressed. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. A Hansom Cab, a Fishmonger's Cart and a Three-Horse Omnibus are among twenty-seven enchanting sketches of horses and carriages made in 1873 by William Francis Freelove. For the amusement of himself and his family, Freelove created a series of lively watercolours of over 70 contemporary horsedrawn vehicles. However, it was not until 100 years later, after lying neglected in an attic among an assortment of family jumble, that his charming collection was discovered and fully appreciated. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. When the word 'computer' entered the general vocabulary in the 1950s, the most advanced example filled a reasonable sized room. Three decades of rapid technological revolution have resulted in the acceptance of computers in nearly every office, school and home. A corresponding dramatic rise in the status of 'information' has promoted the people who manipulate it from the status of office clerks to information scientists. Despite the wonderful claims for the abilities of the computer and the hallowed tones of 'computerese', Theodore Roszak dares to suggest that perhaps, like the unfortunate emperor, the computer has been overdressed with false claims made by those with something to gain by it - elements in our society that are making some of the most morally questionable uses of computer power. Roszak challenges the reader to ask: "Is our capacity to think creatively being undermined by the very 'information' that is supposed to help us? Is information processing being confused with science or even beginning to replace thought? And are we in danger of blurring the distinction between what machines do when they process information and what minds do when they think?" He explains why humankind's primary beliefs, in equality, justice and in God are not computable; why great scientific theories and fundamental 'master ideas' cannot be developed by computers; and why bad ideas cannot even be refuted by them. Roszak is no contemporary Luddite - this book was written on a word processor - but he is deeply concerned that we have all been sold a misleading and potentially harmful vision of the computerised society. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Few magazines have ever won such affection and regard as the Boy's Own Paper. In its meridian years B.O.P.'s influence reached world-wide, and its name is still a household world. First issued on January 18, 1879, price one penny, it was a modest 16-page publication produced by the Religious Tract Society in the earnest hope of counteracting the lurid penny dreadful of the day. A dedicated team set to work to create a magazine which parents and guardians would approve, schoolmasters and ministers would recommend, and boys themselves would buy, read, enjoy. No easy task - but the result was a triumph. Within five years the readership topped a quarter of a million. It became, and was to remain, a British institution. Two generations of boys had grown up with B.O.P. by the time Jack Cox took over as Editor in 1946. He was to remain until the paper's sad closure twenty years later. Himself a reader as a boy, he treasured his contacts with readers, authors and staff past and present, and writing this splendid history of the paper was a labour of love. Drawing on a wealth of illustrations from the original issues, and with engaging glimpses of boardroom deliberations and office routine in earlier times, Jack Cox tells the paper's own enthralling story. He traces its history from the rattling adventures and bracing advice of the Victorian era to the practical hobbies and technical know-how of the post-War world, showing how it won the trust and love of the readers who remember it still with such warm affection. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Whether he is reflecting on the horrors of the bus queue, the heartache of loneliness or a rose in a bottle, Frank Topping succeeds in helping us all see what we so easily miss. The same is true when he turns to the words of Jesus."It seemed as if this had been written specially for me," That was the most frequently repeated phrase when listeners to Radio 2 wrote to the BBC asking for a copy of the script of Frank Topping's morning meditations on Pause for Thought. "What made me decide to broadcast them regularly," says Frank, "was the huge response from listeners - literally thousands."In the Frank Topping series, the Lutterworth Press has published many of his most popular radio meditations. These collections of thoughts and prayers remain a pleasure to use and also a handy reference for those who want to find their favourite meditation.". Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In this lively piece of social history, Brian Glover relates how the brewers and purveyors of beer of the 1940s were not just providing a brew to help keep peopleis mind off the terrors and hardships of war. They also helped fight the worst effects of the bombing of civilian areas, and kept public order by providing a social meeting place, by getting sustenance to the forces on sea as well as on land. Witty tales and factual retails reveal the difficulties faced by manufacturers of what some in the First World War considered to be the devil's brew, taking the minds of the public off the serious business of making war. Brewery fire-fighting teams were always on call to help with the effects of air raids in their areas. Brian Glover shows that by drinking altogether they felt more team-spirit and it helped them relax. Yet the industry survived, even when suffering extensive damage in the Second World War. Brewing beer in shops, petrol rationing, shortages of raw materials, strategies to confuse the enemy, women and pensioners taking over, reduction in licensing hours and the strength of beers, higher taxes: all the problems and the rallying together that typifies the industry during the War are shown in well-researched detail. Published with the support of the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association, Brewing for Victory depicts the true British spirit in action, as the public, pubs and brewers worked together to ensure that the nationis social structure - and its ale - should not be beaten into submission. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. It is sometimes difficult to appreciate the extent to which our current perception of the Middle Ages, grounded in images of plagues, wars, kings, saints, knights and tournaments, is of comparatively recent origin. In what will surely prove a seminal work of historiography, Norman F. Cantor argues that our picture of the medieval world, far from having been excavated by systematic research, is quintessentially the creation of twentieth century historians whose spiritual and emotional outlooks coloured their interpretation of an entire epoch. These strong personalities and creative minds, who brought fresh insights about the past, effectively 'invented' the Middle Ages. Professor Cantor anatomises the story of that invention through the lives of twenty of the great medievalists of this century, beginning with F.W. Maitland, a 'secular saint' and self-taught scholar of incomparable ability, who slipped into historical research and brilliantly traced the emergence of English Common Law. Among the many other scholars Cantor cites are J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, who, working against a background of war and the threatened disintegration of society, envisaged alternative morally ordered and inspiring worlds; Percy Schramm, a Nazi sympathiser, and Ernst Kantorowicz, who later attempted to conceal his earlier pro-Nazi leanings, who both studied medieval kingship; Marc Bloch, a Jew, killed while fighting with the French Resistance, who helped establish the method of the 'Annales' historians, using economic statistics to make broad sociological points; David Knowles, a Roman Catholic monk, who relived his conflicts with his own superiors through the trials of St Francis, and highlighted the medieval church's ambiguous sense of individuality; Joseph Strayer, who eulogised medieval bureaucrats whilst employed by the CIA; and Sir Richard Southern, who combined the conventional career of an Oxford don with a lyrical, original insight into the subtleties of medieval sensibility. In this stimulating, provocative and always intelligently written work, Professor Cantor fashions an immense body of learning in an entirely fresh way. Readers will come away fully informed of the essentials of the subject and also newly aware of the interconnection between medieval civilisation and the culture of the twentieth century. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

This book will make a delightful gift: it is ideal for shared reading aloud at home or in school, and children will enjoy looking at the stylish illustrations. The text is accompanied by Tomie de Paolo's memorable illustrations. Taking his inspiration from Romanesque art, he has incorporated its decorative style in these distinctive pictures. He was particularly attracted by the ornamental, geometric and earthy qualities in the art of this period, especially by the carvings in the small churches of France and Italy. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Israeli archaeologist Amihai Mazar introduces the achievements of the dynamic archaeological research in Israel and Jordan and discusses its implications for our knowledge of the world of the Old Testament. The volume covers the period starting with the first permanent settlements around 10,000 B.C.E., and ends with the destruction of the First Temple by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C.E. and the Babylonian domination of the country. Each of the archaeological periods is presented against its historical and biblical background. Various aspects of the material culture of each period are discussed: the distribution of settlements, the discoveries in the main sites, aspects of civil and religious architecture, pottery making, metallurgy, agriculture, crafts and arts, weapons, jewelry, ritual objects, writing, burial customs, and evidence for trade and cultural relations with neighbouring countries. All these subjects are briefly introduced to create the jigsaw puzzle out of which archaeologists reconstruct the cultural history of the country. The relationship between the archaeological evidence and biblical history is discussed in all relevant chapters. Step-by-step, era-by-era, Amihai Mazar shows just what each archaeological age has to teach the modern reader about the past. The book is illustrated with hundreds of line drawings, maps, photographs, and charts. Bibliographic references provide access to the most recent publications on each of the issues under discussion. This introductory synthesis was written for students and scholars, as well as for those readers interested in expanding their knowledge of the Bible and its world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. There are many different opinions over the origin of the word collect. The Latin collecta means a gathered together. Whatever its origin, however, the collect is a very ancient prayer. This delightfully illustrated book contains the collects from the Book of Common Prayer. Some date back to the time of Leo I, more to Gelasius, and yet more to Gregory the Great. The wording of them in their present form owes much to that liturgical genius Thomas Cranmer, the sixteenth century archbishop and martyr. The collects are a perfect example of the Book of Common Prayer which itself was compiled at a time when for beauty of rhythm and splendour of diction, our language was at its zenith. Time and faith have hallowed this work, and the Prayer Book is now hailed as one of the supreme achievements of the English tongue. The wonderful prayers here are framed with enchanting illustrations which augment and enhance the beauty of the language. A Prayer for all Seasons was originally published by the Prayer Book Society in 1987. This new edition benefits from a clearer and more attractive layout. It starts with the Morning Prayers and continues with those from Christmas, Advent, Easter and the Saints' Days, concluding with the prayers for Holy Communion. Delightfully illustrated with nineteenth-century woodcuts, this is a must for anyone who appreciates the antiquity and beauty of the language of the Book of Common Prayer. With a Foreword by HRH the Prince of Wales, an Introduction by Ian Curteis and an Afterword by the Bishop of London. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…
