Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 418 pages, a very good plus (near fine) hardback in a very good dust-jacket [0714501123]. This is one of those RARE books with a copyright date of 1966 yet still with an SBN number (9 digits). Here is the ISBN History, In 1965, W. H. Smith (the largest single book retailer in Great Britain) announced its plans to move to a computerized warehouse in 1967 and wanted a standard numbering system for books it carried. They hired consultants to work on behalf of their interest, the British Publishers Association's Distribution and Methods Committee and other experts in the U.K. book trade. They devised the Standard Book Numbering (SBN) system in 1966 and it was implemented in 1967.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. SACHS, Maurice. Autobiography (2 vols.); Witches' Sabbath and The Hunt. London: Jonathan Cape / Calder and Boyers & Sidgwick and Jackson, 1965-1967. First UK Editions Thus. I: Very Good+ / Very Good+ | II: Very Good+ / Very Good+. FIRST UK EDITIONS THUS. Sachs was born Maurice Ettinghausen, the son of jewelers, and became one of the most disreputable figures of the French literary world. He died in 1945, just before the war ended, in German captivity. Together these two volumes are his autobiography. An abridged account of his turbulent youth appeared from Arthur Barker in 1935 as Day of Wrath. The unexpurgated text did not reach Britain until 1965, as Witches' Sabbath (Stein & Day had issued it in America the year before). The Hunt followed in 1967; the publisher called it a continuation, though it was left unfinished. Witches' Sabbath first appeared in Paris in 1946 as Le Sabbat; The Hunt as La Chasse à courre in 1949. Witches' Sabbath records Sachs's mostly failed exploits, among them a Paris publishing house where he claims to have been given an advance copy of All Quiet on the Western Front, which then sat unread on his desk for months, "during which I had neither the curiosity nor the presence of mind to have it read by someone who knew German." The Hunt picks up under the Occupation. Sachs withdraws to Normandy, deals on the black market while living with Violette Leduc (thinly disguised as "Pomme"), then moves to Hamburg and begins to work with the Germans and the Gestapo. He remains oddly little known for a man so deep in 1920s French society and so flexible in his wartime morals. The books are not common, but often wrongfully cheap; nevertheless, these are unusually bright copies. I: BOOK: Publisher's grey cloth boards with black title stamp to spine, square and unmarked, corners a little bumped; top-stain faded, internally fine. DUST JACKET: Unclipped dust jacket priced 30s. net, light shelf-wear. Jacket design by Jean Pienkowki. II: BOOK: Publisher's grey/blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine; internally fine. DUST JACKET: Unclipped dust jacket, price label over original 30s price, still present, vibrant and full. Jacket design by Brian Catchpole.
