Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Hudibras was originally published between 1663 and 1678, and is Butler's classic satirical poem, which has remained admired and influential for over three centuries. This 18th Century copy is very smart indeed. Hudibras is a satirical poem by Samuel Butler, first published in parts between 1663 and… 1678, that lampoons religious zealotry, political hypocrisy, and Puritanism in the aftermath of the English Civil War. Written in rhyming couplets and rich with classical allusions, the poem follows the misadventures of the self-important knight Sir Hudibras and his squire Ralpho. Celebrated for its wit, linguistic inventiveness, and sharp commentary, Hudibras was widely read throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and influenced later satirists, including Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. Hudibras in Three Parts. Written in the Time of the Late Wars. Corrected and Amended: With Additions. To Which are Added, Annotations, And an exact INDEX to the Whole. Adorned with CUTTS, designed and engraved by Mr. Hogarth. By Samuel Butler (All 3 Parts are in this one volume, along with an introduction and section on the author's life). Printed for C. Bathurst, E.Johnson, T. Davies, W. Strahan, C. Corbett, B. White, T. Longman, R. Horsefield, T. Becket, J. Nicol, T. Caslon, E. and J. Dilly, Hawes, Clarke, and Collins, T. Cadell, J. Lowndes, B. Tovey, H. Gardner, and Ed. Johnston, London, 1775. A near fine example, rebound with a 20th Century binding - tan leather spine with raised bands, blind embossed tooled decals, and tan morocco title label with gilt. Boards covered with brown cloth. A very smart copy - light wear, crisp edges and soundly bound. Text is bright and clean throughout, with light scattered age spotting in places. This copy is particularly noted for its Hogarth illustrations - comprising 16 Plates, including 5 foldouts. There is also a portrait frontispiece of Butler by J Van der Gucht. Language: English. Frontispiece + Title + xxi + 12-401pp + 17pp Index + 16 Plates (incl. 5 fold-outs). All complete and plates as called for. Dimensions: approximately 175mm high x 110mm wide x 26mm deep. Unpacked weight approximately 374g. More photos available.

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. A smart volume of two, fascinating and very scarce nineteenth-century penny-print pamphlets relating to The Despard Plot, an attempted assassination of George III. Two fascinating early nineteenth-century pamphlets, both undated and relating to The Despard Plot to assassinate George III, foil…ed in 1802. Colonel Edward Marcus Despard was a former colonial administrator and the alleged ringlead of the The Despard Plot to assassinate George III. He was tried and executed for the crime in 1803, with much public outcry. Rebound in modern, paper covered boards with end papers renewed, original rear blank retained. Trial of Col. Despard with a hand coloured, folded frontispiece engraving of the trial. Collated, complete. The first pamphlet, The Memoirs of Miss Louisa Mansell, is a first person account of young woman who claims to be the lover of Colonel Despard. She alleges to have been cruelly tricked by a mysterious Miss Holmes, into meeting with Despard and loosing her virginity to him for thirty pounds. She then claims to have temporarily accompanied him to Fleet Prison. There is no record of this pamphlet on the ESTC or Library Hub Discover. Furthermore, there is no historical record of Despard ever taking a mistress. It is likely that this is a ficticious pamphlet, either invented to discredit Colonel Despard after his death and dissuade further rebellion, or simply produced to feed the popular demand for mass-produced 'penny prints' or, sensationalised and embellished criminal accounts. Despard was in fact married to Catherine Gordon, the daughter of a black free woman from Jamaica, with whom he had one son, James. She played an active role in garnering support for the conspiritors during their imprisonment and became a vital link between the prisoners and their sympathizers. Gordon was suspected to have smuggled contraband into the prison during visits to her husband, but the authorities were too afraid to search her. The second pamphlet, The Trial at Large of Col. Despard, also falls into the genre of the 'penny prints', documenting the trial day by day. It includes the glowing character testimony of Despard by Lord Admiral Nelson, a close friend and colleague of the accused. Despite the prosecution failing to produce substantial physcial evidence of the plot, Despard was execute on 21 February 1803, in front of crowd of approximately 20,000. Together, these pieces provide a fascinating insight into the nineteenth-century world of sensational, cheap print. Rebound in modern, paper covered boards with end papers renewed, original rear blank retained. Externally, excellent. With only very slight handling marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound, though the odd slight strain. Pages are age toned with the occasional handling mark or small closed tear to extremities. Previous owner's ink inscription to verso of first title page. Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). book.

Interestingly, this copy has two armorial bookplates, one pasted on top of the other: one from before Sampson changed his surname to Eardley and was made a baron in 1789, and one after with a baron coronet added to the crest. Sampson was made a baronet in 1759 at age 14 due to his father's lobbying. He served as a Tory MP in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1770 - 1802. Sampson's father, Sampson Gideon Sr., was a Jewish banker based in the City of London, though Sampson Jr. and his sisters were raised Christian like their mother. Overall condition: Very good. This copy is bright, and complete. Care should be taken when handling due to the weight of the volume. Ref: Sabin 30483; Brunet III, 49: "Collection Estimà e.".

Johnson.A very attractive copy of the most popular work of Philip Miller (1691-1771), the foremost British gardener of the eighteenth century, with five folding plates of botanical illustrations. 'Miller's Gardener's Kalendar, published in fifteen editions between 1732 and 1765, catered for the modest gardener who needed practical advice [Miller] produced a work not only portable, but also at a price to suit those who could not afford a larger book. At four shillings a copy it came within the purse of most and indeed was judged to be "a manual to the whole kingdom". Its aim was to bring into "one easy and concise view" what might be of use to those "hindered by other avocations from bestowing much time in the study of this delightful and innocent work" Under each month could be found directions for work to be done in the kitchen garden with notes on its produce, the pleasure or flower garden with plants then in flower, and the greenhouse and stove with their plants in bloom' (Le Rougetel, pp. 1013). Webbe (born Cornelius Francis Webb 1789-1850) "worked as a proofreader for the Quarterly Review. His poetry was published in the Gentleman's Magazine, 1813-1817, and the New Monthly Magazine, 1814-1817, and later in the Literary Speculum. He was an acquaintance and admirer of John Keats, who later referred to him as 'one of our party occasionally at Hampstead.' In 1817, John Gibson Lockhart used lines by Webbe as an epigraph to his infamous attack on Keats and Leigh Hunt in Blackwood's Magazine, 'On the Cockney School of Poetry;' which led Keats to privately denounce Webbe as a 'Poetaster'" (pennyspoetry[.]fandom[.]com).

Small 12mo (approx. 5¾" x 3½"), engraved frontispiece, sectional title page for the N.T.; contemporary full sheep, gilt borders on covers enclosing a central gilt panel, gilt-decorated spine with 2 morocco labels and fillets also with gilt decorations (the bottom one with an early owner's name in gilt: "Chloe Holt's"), board edg…es gilt, edges stained yellow, marbled endpapers; some toning of the text, but in all a very good, sound copy in a nice early fine American binding. "This seems to be an erroneous date as it is too early for a Collins stereotyped edition" (Hills). This is evidently born out in an inscription on the first flyleaf by Chloe Holt dated "Townsend, Sept. 18, 1824." Hills, Bible in America 239 ("not located").
