Il saggio di Balilla Pratella era apparso solo parzialmente, in due puntate, sulla rivista siciliana «La Balza futurista» nella primavera del 1915. Si tratta di un pamphlet militante assai sbrigativo e tutto incentrato sulla «propaganda d'italianità» che procedeva futuristicamente di pari passo con quella interventista. Eccone un estratto minimo: «"La guerra degl'italiani. In contemporary full calf binding with blind-panelled boards, sympathetically rebacked with later calf. Second English edition, revised throughout with extensive improvements and corrections, following Henley's first English edition, published as The Travels of the Learned Father Montfaucon from Paris thro' Italy in 1712. With a half-title and title page printed in red and black. Illustrated with twenty-six vignettes, and five woodcuts. Collated, complete. Originally published in Latin as Diarium Italicum in Paris in 1702, the work records Montfaucon's scholarly journey through France and Italy in 1698 and 1699. Bernard de Montfaucon (1655-1741) was a French Benedictine scholar of the Congregation of Saint-Maur and one of the foremost antiquaries of his generation. An extensively illustrated account of late 17th century antiquarian travel. In a contemporary full calf binding, sympathetically rebacked with later calf.Externally, a little worn. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in loss and scuffing to calf, particularly to extremities. Cracking to joints with chipping and slight loss, more pronounced to spine ends. Slight loss to rear free endpaper at gutter. Rubbing to boards with slight surface wear to calf, with the odd scratch and scuff mark. Hinges strained but holding, with wear to gutters. Volume One, by Marana, a Genoese political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV, is a translation of a manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale, in Paris, and originally published in parts in 1684, in French as l'Espin du Grand Seigneur and in Italian as L'esploratore Turco. Translated into English by William Bradshaw in 1687 under the supervision of Robert Midgley, who held the copyright. The remaining seven volumes appeared first in English, between 1691 and 1694, prefaced with a letter claiming their translation from a discovered Italian manuscript. Their authorship has been attributed to various writers, most notably Midgley and Bradshaw. The letters, written by one "Mahmut the Arabian," cover the period of 1637 to 1682 in France, from the last years of the Regency of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Richelieu through the long reign of Louis XIV and his minister Cardinal Mazarin. Taken together, they form a rambling journal of gossip on politics and society. Mahmut's observations range from those on political figures such as Richelieu and Mazarin to speculations on the status of women, advice about state policy, and major interventions in controversies about religious doctrine and their consequences. The series launched a literary genre, the pseudo-foreign letter, of which Montesquieu's Lettres persanes and Goldsmith's Chinese Letters are examples. Daniel Defoe admired the spy's deist rationalist sympathies, and extended the narrator's account from 1682 to 1693 in his Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in Paris (but see Furbank & Owens, p. 8).
