Exhibition catalogue published to coincide with the exhibition György Gordon (1924-2005) : a retrospective, 19 October 2016 - 25 February 2017. György Gordon was born in Hungary in 1924 and gained his diploma in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in 1953. His life was thrown into turmoil by the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, and he fled to England. More than three decades later he was still inclined to play down the effect of the flight from his homeland, but the evidence to the contrary lies in the intense and expressive qualities of his work. Arriving in London with only a few clothes and speaking very little English, he managed to find work, and after a few years he moved to Wakefield in West Yorkshire, to take up a post as Lecturer at the College of Art in 1964. Dedicating himself to the nurturing of up-and-coming young artists, his own work has been, while not ignored, not as widely recognised as it deserves. Gordon took early retirement from teaching in order to have the time to fully explore all the areas of interest that he had been forced to contain over these past years. His paintings are recognisably in the European Expressionist tradition, sombre tones creating huddled and distorted images of the human form, with their appearance of isolation and inhumanity. Gordon has exhibited widely, including the National Portrait Gallery and Budapest Fényes Adolf Galleria, and his work is now in public and private collections in Britain, Europe, Australia and the USA.

This has led her to work closely with poets, musicians, biophysicists, astronomers, physicists and engineers. Griffiths' geometric abstract works distil sophisticated ideas in a poetic way. Her practice seamlessly bridges the macroscopic and the microscopic and moves from the cosmological to the atomic. Often, her artworks also explore individual and collective memories and histories, as well as Northern, working-class and feminist identities. Her distinctive drawing process involves applying layer upon layer of graphite to a surface and polishing it to a mirror sheen before cutting linear forms into it. Sir William Henry Bragg, and his son Lawrence, changed the way we understand the world around us, all from a laboratory at the University of Leeds. Coinciding with the development of the new Sir William Henry Bragg building, and as part of the Bragg Cultural Programme, this exhibition reveals the story of Bragg's Nobel Prize winning work. Sir W.H. Bragg joined the University of Leeds in 1909 as the Cavendish Professor of Physics. It was here in Leeds where he undertook his pioneering research on X-rays and crystals, with his son Lawrence. They became the first, and so far only, father and son duo to be awarded the joint Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915. The prize was awarded for their work at Leeds, which involved the proposal of an equation which allowed the position of atoms within crystals to be determined from X-ray photographs. The equation is also known as Bragg's Law. Through outstanding objects from the University's Special Collections discover Bragg's pioneering work, and his continued legacy.

These include Black, Queer, feminist and disabled perspectives. The exhibition also includes selected works from the University Art Collection, many of which are being shown for the first time.
