The impressive three volume first edition of this account of book buying in Europe in the early 19th century, illustrated throughout, and written by Thomas Frognall Dibdin on a trip to France and Germany. The first edition of this work, complete in three volumes. Only 1,000 copies of this first edition were produced.A fascinating work on books and book hunting in the early eighteenth century, offering an intriguing insight into the industry.Illustrated with thirteen plates to volume I, alongside thirty-nine vignettes, volume II with twenty-four plates and twenty-four vignettes, and volume III with forty-six plates and fifty vignettes.Collated, complete. In 1818, Dibdin was commissioned by Earl George Spence to purchase books for him on the continent. It was this trip that is described in beautiful detail in this work, which was first published in 1821.Dibdin was accompanied on his trip by George Lewis, and together they spend nine months in French and Germany. They visited various public and private libraries.Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed. Bound without half titles. The volumes are entertaining, recounting their follies and errors during the trip. However the inaccuracies in the book upset the French; the French translation, which appeared in 1825, contained many footnotes that attacked the original text. Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed. Rubbing to spine label of volume I, otherwise externally excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with offsetting to leaves facing plates, and with the odd spot. Bound without half titles. Very Good Indeed. book.

Modern gilt-stamped green morocco, marbled fore-edges; head vol. II chipped, rubbed, faded, spine faded to natural tan, some light wear to extremities. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Complete with all listed 83 steel engraved full-page plates and all listed 63 half-page steel engravings (though a few miss-numbered or miss-placed). Plus, with an additional full page plate facing p. 586 of vol. III, titled, "The Prater, Vienna". Note: half-page illus. are engraved on fine India paper and mounted. Thomas Frognall Dibdin, (1776-1847), born in Calcutta, India, English bibliographer who helped to stimulate interest in bibliography by his own enthusiastic though often inaccurate books, by his share in founding the first English private publishing society, and by his beautifully produced catalog of Lord Spencer's library (which collection later became the nucleus of the John Rylands Library, Manchester). His father, the captain of a sailing ship, was the inspiration for his Uncle Charles Dibdin's song "Tom Bowling." Both of Dibdin's parents died on the passage from India to England in 1780, and at age four he became the ward of his mother's younger brother, Charles Compton. Educated at St. John's College, Oxford, Dibdin began a legal career but took holy orders in 1805. His Introduction to the knowledge of rare and valuable editions of the Greek and Latin Classics (1802) attracted the notice of Lord Spencer, through whose patronage Dibdin obtained a clerical appointment in London. His Bibliotheca Spenceriana (1814âÂÂ"15) became famous for the high quality of its printing. Dibdin travelled widely in search of books and manuscripts, and his Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany (1821) is typical of his work in containing much lively anecdote, many factual errors, and some excellent engravings. His Bibliomania (1809) contributed to the public's interest in old and rare books. Among his many other works is the two-volume autobiography Reminiscences of a Literary Life (1836). - Britannica.

In den Warenkorb[Bibliographical Travel] FIRST EDITION. Complete in three volumes. Octavo (27 x 18cm), pp.[6] xxxii; 462; lxxx [2]; pp.[6] 555 [3]; pp.[6] 622; lxii [2].With a total of 146 engraved illustrations, including 83 plates, and 63 in-text. Occasional use of colour, as in the facsimile of a section from the Bayeux Tapestry, and occasional hinged plates. Also including two indexes (of Books and Manuscripts, and of Persons, Places and Things) to volume I, and the Supplement to volume III. Contemporary or slightly later green half morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spines, and marbled paper over boards. Top edges gilt; others untrimmed. Generally quite a clean copy, with some light occasional spotting to plates, and some offsetting to facing leaves. Volume II has a number of small repaired chips and tears to the margins of some leaves, while volume I has recently been re-cased, including new leather applied to hinges and the tail-cap, and a new tail-band. Repairs also to hinges. Moderate wear to bindings, with rubbing, chipping and re-colouring to bands, hinges and corners, and some wear to marbled boards. Very good. The first of the inimitable Rev. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian tours, made shortly after the end of the long-running wars with France, along with everyone else and his dog who could afford it, apparently. Dibdin's tour, however, is unique in being one made with the chief purpose of admiring fine libraries across the continent, though of course architecture and local manners are considered as well. Dibdin is best-known as the founder of the Roxburghe Club, convened initially to mark the sale of the Duke of Roxburghe's famous library in June 1812, and then re-formed each year on its anniversary. It became the very first Book Club, and remains the most exclusive in the world, with no more than 40 active members at any one time.

Unfortunately this handsome large paper copy has suffered from water damage sometime in the past, additional photographs are available upon request. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis, of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books, manuscripts, buildings, other artefacts and people, both from past centuries and from the author's own day, for the extraordinary collection of illustrations, mostly drawn during the tour itself, and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared, leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship, especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour, and his own interpretations and conclusions, which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm, readable style and entertaining anecdotes, moreover, caught the mood of his age, making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups. was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. Lewis, most perturbed, issued them at his own expense and presented his case in the eight-page Advertisement which was separately printed. Jackson 48; 56; 56n: Windle & Pippin A38a; A44; D13.

Recently professionally recased in maroon linen, gilt titles. Numerous linecuts and engravings. All plates called for in Windle and Pippin present; all half-titles present. A wide-margined, untrimmed set. "Libraries assembled by wealthy bibliophiles became very numerous during the nineteenth century and soon developed from the gentleman's library exemplified by the [Pierre Antoine] Crevenna collection . Like the Crevenna catalogue, the catalogues of such libraries are usually examples of luxurious printing and are sold at high prices, if they are sold at all. The descriptions of the books are often very detailed and often, in the most recent catalogues of this sort, deal with the history of the particular copy that is described. Perhaps Thomas Frognall Dibdin set the pattern for the modern bibliophile owner's catalogue by the Bibliotheca Spenceriana. This and many catalogues like it are naturally valuable to collectors, bibiographers, and scholars." (Taylor: Book Catalogues: Their Varieties and Uses, 8-9). DeRicci calls this catalogue "the handsomest and most elaborate catalogue of a private library yet issued" (English Collectors of Books & Manuscripts, 75). Very occasional spotting, with some chipping to edges. Stamp of a defunct library on title-pages, and occasionally elsewhere, but with no other library markings. Short closed tears to half-title of vol. 1; short tears/small pieces missing to top of several leaves in vol. 2, not affecting text; rear blank of vol. 3 tape-repaired; some offsetting from engravings and linecuts. One plate has feint off-setting to the opposite page and the plate of the Trumpeters performing in concert has a one inch tear to the blank margin which is repaired on the blank verso, and there is also a bit of dusting to this page's edge. The book is otherwise in clean, tight and bright condition. 1 volume. Hardcover.
