Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - On June 3, 1920, Brigadier General Mott Hooton was laid to rest in a quiet corner of Oaklands Cemetery, a leafy burial ground on the outskirts of the small south eastern Pennsylvania town of West Chester. A singular man with a singular name, Mott's subsequent fall into historical obscurity belies an adventurous life inextricably linked to a nation in turmoil and transformation. Educated in the 1840s and 1850s by a militaristic French schoolmaster and forged in the crucible of war as commander of a local unit of volunteer soldiers during the Civil War, Mott became a career soldier who bore witness to the westward expansion of settlers onto lands still occupied by indigenous people; revolutions in industry advanced at the expense of American labor; post-Civil War reconstruction of the American south where racial and ideological divisions remained galvanized long after the cannons fell silent; and the evolution of an insular nation into an imperialist power. All the while encountering some of the most notable men of his age: Meade, Custer, Sitting Bull, Miles, Otis, Chaffee, and Theodore Roosevelt.Complex and enigmatic, the story of Mott Hooton reveals a man dedicated to honor and integrity as an officer of the United States Army, yet often conflicted about the role his Government played in subjugating and displacing the indigenous people of the American west. Possessed of a restless spirit and fascinated by humanity, Mott travelled the world. From the great concert halls of Europe and the shores of the Nile to the immensity of Siberia and the royal court of the King of Siam, the story of Mott Hooton reminds us that greatness can be found in the unlikeliest of places.…

Frances Harriet Whipple Green McDougall was "an abolitionist, poet, novelist, editor, botanist, spiritualist medium, and advocate of women's, voters', and workers' rights. In contrast to many other 19th-century women writers, throughout most of her adult life she earned her living as an author; at the same time she often donated her writing for causes she believed in, such as the abolition of slavery" (Wikipedia). First Edition. 3 vols. 1st edition. Original boards and labels, rebacked with new endpapers (a fitting match). Soiled and worn else very good, but troublesome to weigh against other sets, because variables won't and constants aren't. Just after publishing Ivanhoe, Scott returned to his Scottish roots for this novel. The monastery of the title is Saint Mary's Cistercian Abbey and the action is mostly within or surrounding it. The time is the Scottish Reformation (16th century) when the religious question had not been settled, but Scott wrote as the detached narrator, and presents its resolution as inevitable. The characters are (as is the custom in historical romance) a gathering (or a compaction) of real and fictional figures, playing out their personal, petty roles, rendered (and contrasted) against the great events surrounding them, as worldly life goes on, oblivious to all private vicissitudes and recoveries. The only grownup hero, with a marginally objective sense of the times, is the Catholic Benedictine/Cistercian monk, Sub-Prior Eustace (once William Allan) who fights for his lost cause as stubbornly and gallantly, as would Robert E. Lee, 300 years later.…

First edition in English, published in French the previous year. D'Arvieux was a French traveller and diplomat who journeyed extensively in the Middle East. The content of this volume was drawn from the author's posthumous papers and published by Jean de la Roque, who had himself participated in two expeditions to the Arabian peninsula. Laurent D'Arvieux (1635-1702) left his native Marseilles for the Middle East in 1653, settling first in Sidon with his cousin Bertandie and subsequently travelling throughout the region. A lengthy stay in a Bedouin camp on Mount Carmel enabled d'Arvieux to offer "some very remarkable observations of that nation, which differed greatly from previous reports, and were doubted until confirmed by later travellers such as Niebuhr" (Henze). "In 1672 he was sent to Constantinople where he assisted Nointel and in 1679 he was named Consul at Aleppo" (Blackmer). He learned to speak Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew, and Syriac. Because of his knowledge of Turkish manners and dress he was able to furnish Molière with the Turkish element in Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (1670). He retired to Marseilles in 1686 and lived there until his death in 1702. It was almost certainly there that he met Jean de La Roque, the son of a Marseillaise merchant. La Roque had been interested in d'Arvieux for some time, making enquiries of the French chaplain at Sidon during an expedition in 1688-89. D'Arvieux's friend Antoine Galland, the orientalist and first translator of the Thousand and One Nights, provided La Roque with the manuscript from which this work was produced. The first part are his observations of Arab and Turkish society in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and the Ottoman Empire. He covers religion, hospitality, animals, jurisprudence, trade, food, and funeral customs. The second part was translated by La Roque from the Arabic of Abulfeda (1273-1331), the renowned Kurdish historian and geographer, and was the first translation of Abulfeda's writings. Blackmer 50 for the first French; ESTC T113346; Henze I, 101. Duodecimo (162 x 92 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 4 similar plates. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked to style, red morocco label, compartments decorated in blind, raised bands, boards tooled with blind wavy roll, endpapers renewed, edges speckled red. Signature to first blank of one Jane Carne of Tragern Castle, Cornwall. Binding lightly worn and shaken, minor foxing: a very good copy.…
