In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. [xii], 95, [1], [15] list of subscribers; with an errata slip pasted in at the very end; engraved leaf with initial 'C' after half title; and engraved plate of Belvoir Castle after p. 2; a fine copy, uncut in early patterned cloth, with gilt label: 'Poems. By C.N. 1831.' First and only edition: a series of poems dedicat…ed to the Duke of Rutland which include one lauding the beauty and majesty of Belvoir Castle, the Rutland family seat. The poet is clearly female (she expresses 'her grateful acknowledgements' to the subscribers), and for a moment I thought she might turn out to be Caroline Norton, who was just beginning her literary career in the early 1830s. However, this is much more modest and retiring verse than was produced by the defiant Caroline, and moreover the prefatory advertisement is dated from Hill Cottage, Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire, which was certainly not her milieu. Since one of the poems identifies her sisters as 'H. and F.B.', and the subscription list has Miss Bertram and Miss F. Bertram, both of Kirton-in-Lindsey, it seems very likely that Bertram was her maiden name. Clearly she was married, because the poetry deals with some tragic and very personal subjects, including the death of an infant son. The book was printed in Gainsborough (here spelt 'Gainsburgh') by Adam Stark, and issued by subscription. Although no date is found inside the book, what is clearly an original or very early gilt label on the spine dates it to 1831. Johnson, Provincial Poetry, 646. Copac locates just two copies, at the BL and Bodleian; there is also a copy at Stanford.
