The reminiscences of William Thomas Poague who served four years in the artillery of the Army of Northern Virginia in the Civil War. His first service was with the Rockbridge Artillery, which he commanded from April 1862 to April 1863. After Chancellorsville he ws promoted to lieutenant. colonel. His manuscript diary was discovered by Monroe Cockrell who attended VMI during the period that Poague was treasurer of that institution. Though the jacket boldly proclaims "First Time Published", it was actually first issued by an obscure publisher in 1957.…

This copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped opposite the title page is an Autograph Note Signed from Black, 1p, heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" postal card, New York, NY, [1956] February 14. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-93, Lincoln and Civil War scholar, officer of the New York City Civil War Round Table). Near fine. Preprinted reply card for attending a Civil War Round Table meeting at the New York University Faculty Club. Black indicates he cannot attend, signs boldly at the close and pens a postscript: "P.S. In reply to your inquiry, I was in Jamaica, B.W.I., for 6 days. Lots of fun! But no monuments to C.S. soldiers." The Military Historical Society of Massachusetts' early chronicle is entwined with the life of John Codman Ropes (1836-1899). The son of a Boston merchant, Ropes graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School where he was selected as the first editor of the Harvard Law Review. In 1865 he formed a partnership with John C. Gray. Today the law firm of Ropes and Gray is one of the largest and best-known international practices in the world. A physical disability kept Ropes from serving in the armed forces during the American Civil War. Instead, he became an authority, writing several books about a conflict that took the life of his brother Henry, at Gettysburg. His studies stimulated, along with the support of twelve former Union officers, the formation of the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts on February 7, 1876. Today, the MHSM is the oldest such Society in America and continues to uphold its founding purpose, to investigate questions of military significance with the sole aim for "nothing save the ascertainment of the truth." Regimentals and State Interest, and Confederate Imprints (both official and unofficial). In includes a guide as to how to use this volume and a discussion of determining value. Tom Broadfoot opened his business in 1969 dealing primarily in out-of-print and rare material, books and maps, relating to North Carolina, the South and the West. Later he specialized in Civil War books. In the 70s he evolved into publishing along with opening a 'bricks and mortar' store and offering genealogical research. The compilers made no attempt to list all Civil War titles. There appear to be on the order of 18,000 title (page v). Unless they could establish a value of a particular title it was not listed. Magazine and journal articles are generally not listed. Government documents, unless of particular value, are not listed. Items with multiples editions in most cases did not have editions published after 1970 listed. While this work has been updated, it stands alone as a snapshot in time for both its substantive content and also for its price-points at this pivotal period when the interest in Civil War book collecting had continued its strong increase begun during 'the run up' to the Civil War Centennial.
