First edition, first impression, presentation copy to Margaret Thatcher, inscribed on a presentation plate mounted to the front free endpaper "Presented to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Margaret Thatcher MP on the occasion of her opening the Treasures for the Nation exhibition at the British Museum. On behalf of the Trustees of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Trustees of the British Museum, and the Board of British Gas PLC [signed by chairman of each] 26 October 1988". The exhibition ran from 27 October 1988 to 26 February 1989, displaying objects acquired and conserved through the National Heritage Memorial Fund, which was started under Thatcher's governments; this is the accompanying book. Thatcher's speech opening the exhibition emphasised that the glory of Britain's past was due to a national self-belief, which was being resurrected under her premiership: "As one goes through the Exhibition, one marvels at the people who peopled this land before us. Their enormous confidence that they had in building these great and beautiful houses, their great taste, their great sense of proportion, the great elegance of the architects and of the great furniture people and goldsmiths that were available to do the work which they had commissioned. Remarkable taste, remarkable inspiration, remarkable confidence in the future. We are just regaining that confidence now, but it is nice to go back and see that we are retrieving something that was there in earlier years" (accessible on the Margaret Thatcher Foundation website). The book remained in the possession of Thatcher until her death, afterwards dispersed in her estate sale at Christie's, 2015. Her posthumous bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Quarto. Original blue morocco, spine lettered in gilt, blue cloth slipcase. Slight discolouration to morocco, else fine.
