Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'Never, even in his most optimistic moments, had he visualised a scene of this nature - himself in one arm-chair, a police officer in another, and between them - a mystery.' The Reverend Dodd, vicar of the quiet Cornish village of Boscawen, spends his evenings reading detective stories by the fireside - but heaven forbid that the shadow of any real crime should ever fall across his seaside parish. But the vicar's peace is shattered one stormy night when Julius Tregarthan, a secretive and ill-tempered magistrate, is found at his house in Boscawen with a bullet through his head. The local police inspector is baffled by the complete absence of clues. Suspicion seems to fall on Tregarthan's niece, Ruth - but surely that young woman lacks the motive to shoot her uncle dead in cold blood? Luckily for Inspector Bigswell, the Reverend Dodd is on hand, and ready to put his keen understanding of the criminal mind to the test. This classic mystery novel of the golden age of British crime fiction is set against the vividly described backdrop of a fishing village on Cornwall's Atlantic coast . It is now republished for the first time since the 1930s. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. First published in 1900, this is the original comportment guide for the aristocracy. The want of a literature appealing only to those moving in the highest social circles, and practically incomprehensible to such as have not enjoyed the same advantages of birth, fortune and cellars, has long been regretted by the families of the aristocracy. To supply it the authors have written this treatise. Its ethics are adapted alike to throne-room, boudoir and butler's pantry. During perusal, his Grace (or his valet) will find it applicable to most, if not all, of the contingencies of a ducal existence. Falling in love, going to sea and making a fortune are accidents that may befall a Policeman; but staying with a Cabinet Minister, taking a Duchess in to dinner and seeing a cockaded hat touched in deferential recognition, are sensations enjoyed by the favoured few. A visit to a country house is the summit of refined gratification and at the disposal, therefore, of the guest travelling towards a twelve-course dinner, the authors have placed this essential guide. Among the areas of advice offered are: the dinner table, hunting, shooting, in the ballroom, the precedence of personages, conversation de societe, and the whole duty of the gentleman. An invaluable guide to manners and mores, and as indispensable to the modern aristocrat as it was over 100 years ago. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Tantalizingly few recordings survive of the great writers of the first half of the 20th century. This 70-minute CD brings together many historic items from the British Library Sound Archive to provide a survey of the earliest generation of English-language writers whose voices have survived. Among the rarities are an extract from one of P.G. From radio broadcasts come an extract from the only surviving recording of Virginia Woolf herself, and rare recordings of Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, G.K. Chesterton, John Buchan and Agatha Christie. All the writers represented were born before 1900. The other voices include Arthur Conan Doyle, Max Beerbohm, E.M. Forster, James Joyce, Compton Mackenzie; J.R.R. Tolkien, Aldous Huxley and J.B. Priestley. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. John Keats died at an early age, leaving what have become some of the best-known English poems, such as Ode to a Nightingale, Ode to a Grecian Urn, Ode to Melancholy and Ode to Autumn. In this biography of Keats, Stephen Hebron traces Keats' life and development as a poet, assessing his work in the context of the contemporary social and literary scene. After leaving school, Keats gained an apprenticeship to a surgeon and went on to qualify as an apothecary. But increasingly poetry dominated as his principal interest. He began to move in poetic and artistic circles, counting among his friends and acquaintances Leigh Hunt, Benjamin Haydon, Charles Lamb and Percy Bysshe Shelley and it was not long before his poetry was published regularly. Despite admiration of him by contemporary literary figures, reviewers were not as favourable and in his lifetime the majority of his poetry met with harsh criticism. Having lost his mother and brother to tuberculosis, Keats knew the signs of the illness when he too succumbed. Sent to Italy by his doctors to recuperate, he never returned, dying in Rome aged just 26. His poetry inspired Tennyson and Browning, and the pre-Raphaelite painter ranked him on a par with Dante, Homer, Chaucer and Goethe. Today, Keats is recognised as one of the great poets of the Romantic age, confirmation of his own assertion I think I shall be among the English Poets after my death. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Fine. All life must pass, as Shakespeare said, through nature to eternity. Our understanding of that journey is the starting point for this wide-ranging survey. Peter Whitfield describes the long and complex process of discovery that lies behind that achievement, from the earliest times to the 20th century. He shows how people with enquiring minds and a range of beliefs have tried to build bridges between nature or eternity, and that the history of science, like that of art, is not a simple progression from lower to higher, but a sequence of responses to the world, conditioned by historical circumstances.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Cuthbert, hermit, prior and then Bishop to the monastic community at Lindisfarne, became, upon his death in 687, one of the most important medieval saints. Several "Lives" were written about him, pilgrims came to Durham to benefit from the healing powers associated with him, and his feast days were celebrated throughout Europe. However, the rising cult of Thomas Becket after his assassination in 1170 threatened Cuthbert's popularity and the monastic community at Durham was forced to exert special efforts to revive his cult. This rejuvenation involved the production of new literary material to increase the popularity of Cuthbert and thus to enhance the political and economic status of the region. This work tells the story of Cuthbert's life and of the efforts to rejuvenate his cult in late-12th-century Durham. It also focuses on one of the most sumptuously decorated "Lives" of Cuthbert produced at this time and explaines its central importance to the revival of the cult. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Arthur Simpson - 'British to the core', but without a passport to prove it - lives in Athens, scraping by as a driver, journalist and petty thief. When Simpson spots Harper at the airport he recognises him as a tourist new to the city and in need of a private driver. But an ill-judged attempt to relieve Harper of his traveller's cheques reveals him to be a highly sophisticated criminal, and entangles Simpson in a complex double blackmail. Simpson becomes an unwilling member of an armed gang in Istanbul, tasked with driving a suspicious car across the border. Soon he is an even less willing agent for the Turkish secret police, who suspect Harper of planning a coup - but his plans are far more audacious than that, and Simpson is in very deep water indeed. The Light of Day won the Edgar Award for best novel in 1964, and was the basis for the classic film Topkapi. Like much of Ambler's finest work, the novel focuses on an innocent man caught in a web of intrigue and deceit, and Simpson is one of the most memorable heroes in any classic thriller. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Duchlan Castle is a gloomy, forbidding place in the Scottish Highlands. Late one night the body of Mary Gregor, sister of the laird of Duchlan, is found in the castle. She has been stabbed to death in her bedroom - but the room is locked from within and the windows are barred. The only tiny clue to the culprit is a silver fish's scale, left on the floor next to Mary's body.Inspector Dundas is dispatched to Duchlan to investigate the case. The Gregor family and their servants are quick - perhaps too quick - to explain that Mary was a kind and charitable woman. Dundas uncovers a more complex truth, and the cruel character of the dead woman continues to pervade the house after her death. Soon further deaths, equally impossible, occur, and the atmosphere grows ever darker. Superstitious locals believe that fish creatures from the nearby waters are responsible; but luckily for Inspector Dundas, the gifted amateur sleuth Eustace Hailey is on the scene, and unravels a more logical solution to this most fiendish of plots.Anthony Wynne wrote some of the best locked-room mysteries from the golden age of British crime fiction. This cunningly plotted novel - one of Wynne's finest - has never been reprinted since 1931, and is long overdue for rediscovery. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In classic British crime fiction, dazzling detective work is often the province of a brilliant amateur - whereas the humble police detective cuts a hapless figure. The twelve stories collected here strike a blow for the professionals, with teasing mysteries to challenge hard-working police officers' persistence and scrupulous attention to detail. As in his previous anthologies for the British Library Crime Classics series, Martin Edwards introduces readers to fascinating neglected gems of British crime writing as well as uncovering lesser-known stories by the great novelists of the golden age. Each of these stories combines realism with entertainment, skillfully blending the conduct of a criminal investigation with a compelling murder-mystery plot.
