Bryan Mark Riggs aufsehenerregende Arbeit, für die er den William E. Colby Award 2003 erhielt, erscheint nun in einer vom Autor durchgesehenen deutschen Fassung. Ausführliche Interviews mit über 400 überlebenden deutschen Soldaten jüdischer Abstammung, unter ihnen Helmut Schmidt, Egon Bahr und Wolfgang Spier, und mit ihren Verwandten bilden die Basis für Riggs bewegende Darstellung. Die Interviewten machten ihm unschätzbares Quellenmaterial zugänglich, das bis dato völlig unbekannt oder unbeachtet geblieben war. Intensive Archivstudien erschlossen weitere wichtige Dokumente. Dass 'kein Jude Volksgenosse sein' dürfe, hatte schon das Parteiprogramm der NSDAP gefordert. Mit den 'Nürnberger Gesetzen' (1935) wurde die Ausschlussforderung Wirklichkeit, und sie galt auch für die Wehrmacht. Juden und 'Mischlinge', diesen gleichgestellt, waren fortan 'wehrunwürdig'. Wesentlich mehr Soldaten, als bisher angenommen, waren von den anschließenden Verfolgungs- und Säuberungsmaßnahmen betroffen, bis zu 150.000, schätzt Rigg. Aber Tausende von 'Mischlingen' dienten weiter, mit falschen Papieren oder mit Ausnahmegenehmigungen, deren Erteilung sich häufig Hitler selbst vorbehalten hatte.
