Using geodetic and statistical analysis techniques these charts are shown to be mosaics of partial charts that are considerably more accurate than has been assumed. Their accuracy exceeds medieval mapping capabilities. These sub-charts show a remarkably good agreement with the Mercator map projection. It is demonstrated that this map projection can only have been an intentional feature of the charts' construction. Through geodetic analysis the author eliminates the possibility that the charts are original products of a medieval Mediterranean nautical culture, which until now they have been widely believed to be.…

This set of papyrus fragments, the greatest find of Sappho fragments since the beginning of the 20th century, provides significant new readings and additions to five previously known songs of Sappho (frs. 5, 9, 16, 17 and 18), as well as the remains of four previously unknown songs, including the new Brothers Song and the Kypris Song. Es gibt keinen heimatlichen Hafen mehr, der zu erreichen wäre; es herrscht 'transzendentale Obdachlosigkeit' (Lukács); 'Gott ist tot' (Nietzsche). Die Schiffe - seit dem Fliegenden Holländer, der übersinnliche Werte im Geist des neu erwachten kopernikanischen Paradigmas als normative Orientierungspunkte ablehnt - irren und fahren sie mit dem 'Wind, der in den untersten Regionen des Todes weht' (Kafka). D. h., das trotzig abgewiesene Sinnangebot der übersinnlichen Welt behält negativ seine Kraft: Es hindert die Lebensreise des modernen Menschen, hienieden ans Ziel zu kommen. Die Unendlichkeit, zu der menschliches Streben fortan verurteilt ist, wird als Strafe erlebt für die Auflehnung gegen eine robustere Gestalt von Absolutheit, die von Stund an als unwiederbringlich abgegolten erlebt wird. Mittlerweile in ihrer 3., erweiterten Auflage präsentiert Manfred Frank die Geschichte des Motivs vom Fliegenden Holländer, dem Ewigen Juden bis zu Rimbauds Trunkenem Schiff und zu Kafkas Jäger Gracchus. Neben den verwandten Motiven des 'kommenden Gottes' (der 'neuen Mythologie') und der in Kälte erstarrenden Herzen gehört es zu denen, die am sprechendsten von den Pathologien der Moderne Zeugnis ablegen.…
