Juni 1258 wurde das Ergebnis verkündet: Den Schiedsspruch, den sog. »Großen Schied«, haben beide Parteien beschworen und besiegelt. Der Erzbischof behielt das höchste Richteramt und das Selbstverwaltungsrecht der Stadt wurde anerkannt. Auch wenn der Erzbischof den Großen Schied bereits ein Jahr später quasi beiseite wischte, blieb er doch rechtlich für die Kölner Stadtgeschichte bedeutsam: Der Schied stellte nicht nur eine wichtige Etappe in der Entwicklung der städtischen Verfassung dar, sondern erstmals wurde hier die Kölner Stadtverfassung überhaupt aufgezeichnet. Aus Anlass der 750-Jahrfeier stellt das Buch die Geschichte dieses bedeutsamen Dokumentes umfassend dar: Es widmet sich der Vorgeschichte, den beteiligten Personen, ihren Forderungen und Standpunkten sowie den rechtlichen Grundlagen und Beziehungen, auf denen der Schiedsspruch fußt. Auch die Bedeutung des Großen Schieds für die Kölner Stadtgeschichte wird eingehend gewürdigt.
