Harte Arbeit bestimmte das Leben des Viechdoktors, vor allem in den Berggegenden, in denen arme Bauern mit Naturalien für die Behandlung ihrer Tiere zahlten. Echte Abenteuer erlebten Landtierärzte, wenn sie mit Materialseilbahnen zu hoch gelegenen Bauernhöfen hinaufgezogen wurden, oder zu Fuß, mit dem Fahrrad oder mit dem Motorrad auf schlechten Straßen zu ihren Patienten unterwegs waren. Aber nicht nur Tiere wurden von den alten Landtierärzten behandelt, sondern mitunter auch Menschen, die mit der Behandlung höchst zufrieden waren. Es ist eine spannende Welt, die hier aufbereitet wird und die es wert ist, dass man sich ihrer erinnert.

Ethnomusicologist Sarah Weiss, herself a gamelan musician who has directed ensembles in Australia and the United States over many years, examines for the first time the musical practices, concepts, stories, changing historical circumstances, and myths that have shaped 'female-style' gender playing into a uniquely significant mode of artistic practice.This study is the first large-scale treatment of gender issues in Indonesian music. This approach stresses the role of moral imagination and metaphor in ethical deliberation, accepts a plurality of values, and recognizes the importance of case-by-case balancing. In the discussion of genetically modified animals, both intrinsic ethical concerns and animal welfare concerns are addressed.
