This model postulates that the innovation process should be flexible and cross organizational boundaries, which enables the transfer of knowledge and capabilities between organizations. However, until now, it remained unclear which types of firms apply open innovation, whether it realy raises their performance, and how this can be managed in the best way. This book addresses the important issue how innovative firms profit from external knowledge to improve their innovation performance. Using large scale empirical evidence from the Dutch industry, this book shows that especially Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) and firms from low-tech sectors have increasingly adopted open innovation strategies over the period 1994-2004, and are clearly catching up large and high-tech firms. The results indicate that firms pursuing an open innovation strategy perform better with regard to innovation than firms that innovate exclusively in-house. In contrast to the common opinion that large Mergers & Acquisitions (M&As) are bad for innovation, it turns out that M&As have a positive impact on long-term innovation performance. In times of economic cricis this can be an extra argument for governments to back large scale M&As. Large (medium) high-tech M&As in the life sciences industry were analysed in-depth, to investigate the dynamics of post M&A integration. This book shows the different types of innovation synergies that can be expected from M&As and how they can be realized by systematic post M&A integration. Finally, this book studies how innovation brokers fulfill essential roles in innovation networks of SMEs in the agri-food sector. It is estimated that 250 million farmers participate in agricultural cooperatives in developing countries. Agricultural cooperatives are considered to be a fundamental pillar of rural development strategies, as well as a core institution in the process of governance decentralization and agri-business development. In Ethiopia, where agro-ecological conditions are generally favourable, 85 percent of the national population lives in rural areas under subsistence or semi-subsistence regimes. Agricultural cooperatives are advocated by the government as key market institutions to exploit Ethiopia's agricultural growth potential. The scope of this study is to improve the understanding of the role played by cooperative organizations in linking Ethiopian smallholder farmers to emerging markets. Through exploring the evolution of supermarkets, integrated supply chains, and global commodity exchange networks, this study sheds light on the relationship between rural cooperation and farmers' competitiveness. Quantitative data that form the basis for this study were collected from the Highland regions of Ethiopia, in the period between 2003 and 2006. Findings suggest that cooperatives are not a panacea to boost rural competitiveness. Collective action assists smallholders in procuring state subsidy for production, but does not necessarily lead to increased commercialization. Only when collective action involves collective marketing do farmers become more commercial, further improving production volumes and productivity. However, in the process of commercialization and production intensification quality management is often neglected in Ethiopian agricultural cooperatives. This study reveals guidelines for public-private partnerships so that cooperative farmers can maximize commercialization and optimize the balance between quality and productivity.…

Nach dem Tode von Adolf Kardinal Bertram, dem letzten deutschen Erzbischof von Breslau, wählte das Domkapitel Piontek am 16. 7. 1945 zum Kapitelsvikar, d. h. zum Verwalter der Diözese bis zur Ernennung eines neuen Bischofs. Da es aber zu keiner neuen Besetzung des deutschen Bischofstuhls in Breslau mehr kam, behielt Piontek die Funktion des Kapitelsvikars bis zu seinem Tode 1963. Nach der Vertreibung aus Breslau im Juli 1946 zog er sich 1947 nach Görlitz zurück. Papst Paul Johannes der XXIII. ernannte ihn 1959 im »Erzbischöflichen Amt Görlitz« zum Titularbischof von Barca in Libyen. Konrad Hartelt entwirft in seinem Buch ein umfassendes Lebensbild Ferdinand Pionteks, das dessen Wirken von seinem Einsatz als Kaplan in Berlin und Pfarrer in Köslin über die Domkapitularszeit in Breslau bis hin zur Amtszeit als Kapitelsvikar und als Bischof in Görlitz würdigt.…
