Neuware - This is the first comprehensive monograph on the theology of Abu l-Qasim al-Ka?bi al-Balkhi (d. 319/931), a leading Mu?tazili who flourished at the end of the Baghdadi school and at the beginning of the scholastic phase of Mu?tazili history. The study of al-Ka?bi's theology has been hindered by historiographical barriers: the fragmentary nature of extant articles, and the difficulties of reconstructing their contexts. This work investigates the twofold challenge of recovering al-Ka?bi's theology on the basis of a source-critical reconstruction of major extant fragments. One result of this study positions al-Ka?bi's theology as influenced less by the precepts of a Baghdadi school, and guided more by his individual views and affinity for earlier independent Mu?tazili positions. Another result not only corroborates al-Ka?bi's previously noted contributions in epistemology and cosmology, but also argues for their centrality to his theology as a whole.

The work has resulted in a clarification of the earlier sources the compilers of LLSL used in the bilingual part. The author argues that contrary to what scholars have thought of it until now, the linguistic corpus of the glossary is not homogeneous and does not represent a single linguistic status; it does, however, shed some light on chronological and philological questions concerning the earlier works incorporated in it.

Based on pervasive field research, this study suggests that Pentecostalism stands in tension with the social imaginary of the middle class and is perceived as an inappropriate lower class practice. As such, middle class Pentecostals negotiate the appropriateness of their religious belonging by demonstrating distinctive tastes and styles of Pentecostalism. Abstaining from the expressiveness, emotionality, and strong spiritual practice that have marked the movement, they create a milder and socially more acceptable form of Pentecostalism. Increasingly turning into a middle class movement, this style has the potential to embody the future shape of Pentecostalism.

Spanning nearly forty years, Augustine's entire clerical career was spent combating the Donatists and seeking the dominance of the Catholic Church in North Africa. Through a variety of approaches Augustine evolved a method to successfully outlaw and deconstruct the Donatist Church's organisation. This hinged on concerted preaching, tract writing, integrating Roman imperial authorities, and critically: by denying the Donatists' exclusive claim to Cyprian of Carthage. Re-appropriation of Cyprian's authority required Augustine and his allies to re-write history and pose positions contrary to Cyprian's. In the end, Cyprian was the Donatists' no longer.
