Giovanni Casanova gelang als Künstler eine von Erfolgen begleitete Karriere, zunächst in Rom als hochgelobter Antikenzeichner, der auch in Herkulaneum tätig war, und dann ab 1764 in Dresden als bewunderter Kunsttheoretiker und Altertumskenner. Seine klassizistische Kunstlehre, vorgetragen in mehrjährigen Vorlesungen, wirkte weit über Dresden hinaus und zog viele junge Talente an. Kanz Biographie schildert, eingebettet in die Familiengeschicke und die Akademiegeschichte, erstmals die bewegte Karriere Giovanni Casanovas. Prägend war die Mitarbeit bei Mengs in Rom, seine Freundschaft und stärker noch seine spätere Feindschaft zu Winckelmann, wechselhaft war seine künstlerische Produktion und berüchtigt sein Hang zu Kontroversen mit Kollegen.
