The work edited here (in linked excerpts), an anonymous composition in 1611 rhymed hexameters, is an example of the exegetical type of biblical versification that became popular from the eleventh century onwards. The poem, likely composed in the middle to late eleventh century, forms a lengthy commentary on the genealogy of Jesus as it is recorded in the first seventeen verses of the gospel of Matthew, but the poet ranges widely over the entire Bible for his material, frequently drawing on the Old Testament (especially the books of Genesis and Kings) for details about the characters dealt with. Some of the characters in the poem are not even mentioned in Matthew, e.g. the first three sons of the patriarch Jacob; and the poet tackles two of the problems presented by Matthew's genealogy: that without counting Jeconiah twice, the division of the forty-two generations of Jesus' ancestry into three sets of fourteen is incomplete, and that the father of Joseph (the husband of Mary) is called Jacob in Matthew but Heli in Luke. This poem's solution to the latter problem is particularly convoluted, and not based on any of the poet's known or presumed sources. In the manuscript edited here, Heidelberg, Universitatsbibliothek, MS. Salem IX 15, dating to the late eleventh or early twelfth century, the poem is accompanied by extensive interlinear and marginal glosses, which provide lexical, grammatical, and syntactical aids as well as summaries, interpretations, and comments on the text, thus giving much essential assistance to readers of verses that are frequently very difficult to construe. The Liber generationis was edited in full by Martin Rodel in 1999; the present edition is of extracts only (totalling 860 verses), preserving as well as possible the internal logic of the text, but reducing its length in order to make the work more useful for teaching purposes and more accessible to a student audience. The 860 verses are accompanied by all their glosses, printed on facing pages; extensive footnotes to both the poem and the glosses supply references to biblical and other sources, clarifications of the biblical narrative presented by the poet (especially when the medieval glosses do not provide sufficient help), and translation aids. The introduction to the edition discusses the content and organization of the poem, its rhyme and meter, the complexity and difficulty of its language and the unusual features of its style, the nature of the codex, and the glosses; the section on glosses includes examples of how the poem and glosses must be read together to form a complete understanding of the text. A select bibliography, textual notes, and three appendices - a list of all the biblical names mentioned in the text, a genealogical table, and a list of the interpretations given to the biblical names in the text - complete the volume. Neuware - Rievaulx abbey was one of the most prominent houses of white monks (Cistercians) in England, and became in the course of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries an important feature of the ecclesiastical and social landscape of Yorkshire. The present work is the first in-depth study devoted to Rievaulx's social history. The abbey's once extensive archives were largely destroyed after the Dissolution, but the surviving late-twelfth-century cartulary provides a fascinating insight into the process of creating institutional memory, preserving and shaping information about various neighbours of the abbey, and creating a 'map' of social networks that developed around Rievaulx. The complex picture of building and sustaining connections between the abbey and its lay patrons, benefactors and neighbours forms a core to this book. This study also examines how Rievaulxco-existed with other religious institutions in the area, and particularly the practical dimension of friendships between abbots, declarations of mutual support between monastic communities, and how these were reconciled with a fierce competition for land and donations. Contacts between Rievaulx abbey and the nearby archbishops of York and bishops of Durham were intense and these contacts demonstrate how important these prelates were as potential supporters, and how broader ecclesiastical issues influenced their relationships with Rievaulx. Whilst exploring the case of one particular monastery this book is an important contribution to the current debate on the shaping of Cistercian practice, and particularly the mechanisms for the interaction between laity and monastic communities, during the High Middle Ages.

Serfdom was distinct from slavery in that serfs were recognized as something more than chattels. They could contract legitimate marriages, hold personal property and they could not be moved around at will. The fact that serfs were in many regions a minority of the peasant population, and the increasing importance given to social and economic circumstances over legal definitions led historians to move away from examining servile condition and its implications during much of the late twentieth century. Attention has instead focused on the seigneurial regime and village society with little regard for the influence of status. In the Middle Ages and indeed in all pre-industrial societies, the vast majority of the population tilled the land. We are still not in a good position to evaluate how noble and ecclesiastical landlords received revenues from lands they were only indirectly engaged in farming, thus there are important gaps in our knowledge of the basic factors that governed medieval society. What kind of agricultural system provided the impetus for economic growth that so dramatically increased the number of cities and volume of trade There is no modern, synthetic book on medieval serfdom that compares regions or draws general conclusions about it. This work attempts such a synthesis and also shows avenues of future research, but most importantly it is intended to reorient attention to the importance of serfdom in the structure of medieval society.

In medieval studies, art historians, historians, codicologists, philologists and others have applied their methods to the study of illuminated manuscripts and other works of art. These studies have shifted from a concern about the contents of the messages contained in the artefacts (e.g. in iconography) to an interest in the ways in which they were communicated to their intended audiences. The perception of texts and images, their reception by contemporaries and by later generations have become topics in their own right. The analysis of individual manuscripts and works of art remains the basis for any consideration of their transmission and uses. Yet the time has come for an evaluation of the results of recent work on medieval communication. The interactions between non-verbal and verbal forms of communication, more in particular the relations between visual symbols other than writing and the recording of speech in writing, are important for the evaluation of both images and texts. According to some, medieval images may be 'read'. According to others, the perception of images is fundamentally different from that of texts. The fifth includes an extensive iconographic index of themes common to various countries as well as themes that are unique to a single country. Volume I of this series, Medieval Misericords in France, covers approximately 300 churches that still contain gothic misericords with carved figures and narratives inspired by oral traditions suh as proverbs and folk tales, as well as by manuscript marginalia, romanesque capitals, illustrated bibles, engravings, playing cards. A vast portrayal of medieval life - rural activities, urban occupations, conjugal relationships, monastic life -- is displayed in these carvings under the seats of choir stalls along with costumes of the times, town and collegiate architecture, mechanical devices. Puns and rebuses are often intertwined with these themes to produce comic and, to twenty-first century eyes, mysterious puzzles. The global view of misericord carvings, generally ignored in studies of medieval art, is here presented as a multidisciplinary basis for further research by sociologists, historians, archeologists and other medieval scholars. Following volumes include misericords in Iberia, Flemish and borthen Europe, Great Britain. This volume examines the medieval choir stalls, especially their misericords, in the Iberian Peninsula: Portugal and Spain, most of which are extraordinarily beautiful. Fourteen churches in Spain and two in Portugal still have sets of Gothic choir stalls. These sixteen cathedrals, churches and monasteries compare with over two hundred churches with medieval choir stalls in France. The Iberian choir stalls are mainly the original sets for that church. Those at Belmonte, however, were moved from Cuenca but they were the original set at Cuenca where they were replaced by Baroque stalls. The set that was destroyed at Tomar has also not been replaced with Gothic stalls. It should also be noted that while fewer churches are surveyed in this second volume, the percentage of narrative carvings is higher in Spain than in France where many of the early carvings are foliate. 750 misericords with narrative motifs have been identified on the Iberian stalls as compared with over one thousand in France. Such comparisons indicate the richness of the Iberian stalls, which have over twice as many narrative carvings per ensemble as the French stalls. This profusion of carvings necessitates a rather lengthy iconographic index in this volume. Most of the motifs on stalls in north and central Europe are repeated on the Iberian stalls. There are, however, fewer examples of some themes and more of others. It is rare in Iberia to find a carving of a New Testament scene. No set is concerned totally with the Old Testament as at Amiens and the former set at St Victor of Paris. However, Aristotle still carries Phyllis on his back, the fox preaches to the barnyard animals, the mermaid carries her mirror and comb and the peasant carries his sack to ease the burden on the donkey. The proverbs in Spain and Portugal are mainly Flemish with some additional local sayings. We see more of Hercules in Iberia and more illness. In addition to carved misericords in Iberia, sculptures adorn the arms, dorsal panels, canopies, and partitions between the seats, arm-rests and other structural components. Some of these elements, such as canopies on the base stalls and canopy dividers (roundels or teardrop-shaped projections at the junction of the canopy with the dorsal panel on both base and high stalls) do not even exist on the choir stalls of other countries. Arm-rests in Iberia are usually elaborate and complement the motifs on the misericords. The profane carvings on these parts of the stalls are listed briefly in this volume since they are usually directly related to the misericord motifs. The battling couple may be seen no.
