Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A collection of essays by and about the missionary Roland Allen, focusing on his critique of the ministry and the inherited Church policy that surrounds it.No one was more radically critical of the ministry and the inherited Church policy that surrounds it than Roland Allen (1868-1949), whose… prophetic writings constantly challenge the whole mission of the Christian Church, and many of his most important essays are collected here along with contributions about him. After studying at Oxford, his clerical training was in Leeds. He went as a missionary to China for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG), where he stayed for twenty years. His experience convinced him that missionary methods needed changing, and that St Paul had more to offer than contemporary practice, and in particular that ministry should be centred in the laity. These ideas, unpopular at the time, have grown in importance, and Roland Allen's influence is now greater than at any time. In this volume, Paton, with the co-operation of Grubb and King, has written on the central concerns of Allen's life and how his witness gave rise to many fruitful enterprises in different parts of the world. Many new writings of Allen's are included in the volume, and Grubb tells the story of the Survey Application Trust which, for over half a century played a formative and pioneering part in the mission of the church. This title adds a lot of new information and throws fresh light on the modern history of many Christian enterprises, and extends current debate over the role of the laity.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An account of the Biblical foundation and motivation for mission, based on modern theological research. The twentieth century marked the end of an era in western relations with Asia and Africa, and in Christian missionary enterprise. The Gospel had reached the ends of the earth, and the church…es founded as a result of missionary effort, albeit representative of precarious minorities, had a new relationship with their mother churches, and had taken up their own evangelistic tasks. Were missions an historical contingency Is there theological necessity for the churches to continue, in an ecumenical area, to send missionaries across secular and national boundaries A re-examination of the Biblical basis of mission was an essential part of the search for an answer to this question. Blauw has surveyed what twentieth-century theologians felt about the problem. Blauw bases his account of the foundation and motivation for mission on theological and biblical research. The Author shows that: 'a 'theology of mission' cannot be other than a 'theology of the Church', as the people of God called out of the world, placed in the world, and sent to the world.'.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An authoritative biography of Calvin, explaining his central role in the Reformation and clearing away misconceptions and prejudices that surround him.Few great men have been so consistently misunderstood as Calvin and the eminent Swiss man of letters, Emanuel Stickelberger, throws a vivid li…ght upon both the man and his times. Stickelberger sees the pale, frail man of Geneva against the background of the tumultuous times in which he lived. His iron will constant struggle with ill health, utter dedication to his task, almost super-human capacity for work and indifference to financial reward, are all arrestingly portrayed. Stickelberger paints his portrait with a remarkable economy of words and with a fine sense of drama. The result is a vivid and fascinating study of a man and an epoch that holds the reader's attention from the first page to the last.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A critical analysis of the liturgical rites in the Scottish, English, Welsh and Irish churches, showing the bases of Reformed Worship.Barkley introduces his subject by presenting the basic similarities between the Churches and their worship which rests upon the Christian doctrine of God, and…is centred in the person and work of Jesus Christ. He differentiates Protestant doctrine from Catholic and Reformed doctrine from Protestant, whilst maintaining the universal theme that Christian worship is not simply the experience of the individual, but of the individual in community: the worship of a family, the Church.Once these fundamentals have been established he continues with a critical analysis of the Eucharistic, Baptismal and Confirmation rites in the Scottish, English, Welsh and Irish liturgies. He differentiates between the Catholic, Evangelical and Reformed doctrines, reminding the reader of their similarities, and the doctrines in which they diversify, before he establishes the similarities between Catholic. In this sense the author claims that to be Reformed, or Presbyterian, it is essential to be Christian, Catholic and Calvinist not only in doctrine but also in worship.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A theological and historical discussion of the problem of communication in the Christian Church.Everywhere in the world . . . the Christian Church finds itself on the way to rediscovering, re-evaluating and restating its marching order,' says the author in the opening lines of this discussion… of the problem of communication in the Church. Kraemer explains why the communication of the Christian faith is difficult and how human communication, broken through the Fall, may be restored. The Author elaborates a fundamental theology of communication, stressing the difference between 'communication between' and 'communication of'. He treats communication historically, pointing out that the character of the message creates a tension with which the Church has to live. The more the Church is concerned with the problem the healthier it becomes. He discusses the psychological, sociological, and cultural factors involved in communication, analysing its breakdown and suggesting that the difficulty in overcoming it is partly caused by assumptions that it can be solved by language and method. Communication problems are a feature of modern culture, due to the breakdown of the unity of Western culture. Kraemer stresses that the main issue in restoring communication is not that of using more intelligible language nor of devising programs as primary needs. It is that the Church, in self-criticism and self-examination, should recover consciousness of its true nature and calling and change its ways to reflect the truth that 'judgement must begin at the house of God and not at the house of the world.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The great Reformer's sermons on Isaiah 53, seen as one of the most important prefigurings of the suffering of Christ for the people of God.Originally preached as a series, these seven sermons concerning the critical chapters of the Book Isaiah, demonstrate some of Calvin's most profound thoug…hts.Christian theologians from the time of the Early Church have seen Isaiah 53 as the most important prefiguring of the suffering of Christ for the people of God, and Calvin's sermons bring out the theological significance of this key chapter for Christians. Calvin began to preach on Isaiah in 1556, and to aid with the comprehension of the text, each sermon is preceded by an abridgement of the relevant passage from the 1559 commentary. The book of Isaiah is one of the three longest books of the Bible and quoted more by Jesus and New Testament prophets than any other Book. It has remained an important and influential text and is as relevant for Christians today as it has been throughout the centuries. Not only does this book illuminate the more difficult elements of the text, but it is done so by one of the greatest Protestant theologians, and is ably translated by T.L.H. Parker.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An analysis of the affinities between Unitarianism and the Broad Church movement within 19th-century Anglicanism. The author defines Yesterday's Radicals as nineteenth-century Anglican Broad Churchmen and Unitarians, and aims in his book to demonstrate the affinities between them and the manne…rs in which they influenced each other. The Broad Churchmen constituted the progressive wing of the Anglican Church, who were interested in science, Biblical criticism, a rational approach to religion, and who were leaders in the attempt to relate the Church's teaching to the new thoughts and conditions of the nineteenth century. But they were not alone. The Unitarians were possessed of a similar spirit, and came to regard reason and conscience as the criteria of belief and practice. This book demonstrates the growing respect between them, as they tried to grapple with the problems of their day. It lucidly takes the reader through the ramifications and complexities of Biblical criticism, and discusses the answers given to the problems of Biblical inspiration and miracles, amongst others. It demonstrates how Unitarians and Broad Churchmen affected each other, and that much of which is now taken for granted in enlightened theological circles was developed by Yesterday's Radicals. The author traverses territory not previously opened up in this way, for the affinity between these groups has hitherto not been the subject of analysis. This pioneering study was awarded the Earl Morse Wilbur Prize for Historical Research.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The range and sweep of John Calvin's theology have rarely been more comprehensively presented than by Niesel in this important book, which has long been recognised by Calvin scholars and students of Reformation theology as an essential work.Niesel moves systematically through the great Reform…er's theology and provides a lucid exposition. He does this by breaking Calvin's theology into categories, both major - such as the Trinity and the Bible - and more mundane - like the limits of secular government. His analysis both illuminates Calvin's ideas and helps to set them into the framework of their time.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The biography of one of the leaders of the Evangelical Movement at the beginning of the nineteenth century. As the son of Henry Venn of Huddersfield and friend of Charles Simeon, William Wilberforce, Henry Thornton, and Hannah More, John Venn tends only to be remembered because of his relatio…nship to them, but his avoidance of the limelight should not lead to an underestimation of his influence. As Rector of Clapham, Venn was the prototypically effective nineteenth-century town parson, but through his role as first Chairman of the Church Missionary Society and as Chaplain to the Clapham Sect his influence was felt on the wider Church. Full use has been made of the Venn Family Papers and other original sources, including letters and diaries.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A study of the meeting of Christianity and non-Christian religions and the religious dialogue that emerges from the clash of cultures between East and West. The meeting of Christianity and the non-Christian religions, the impact of East on West, and West on East, the clash of cultures and the…movement of divine and human forces that are changing the pattern of man's life, form the basis of Kraemer's magisterial book.He deals historically with the world situation as he sees it because history determines the mood in which East and West approach this 'coming dialogue'. In a series of masterly chapters Kraemer surveys the position of the world's religions deeply enmeshed in socio-cultural systems that create both barriers to change but impetus towards evolution. The dialogue with the 'grand, elusive, Eastern systems of humanist thinking' demands searching thought, fundamental re-adjustment of methods and readiness to find fresh points of contact. It will, however, vindicate the personal conception of the living God as manifest in Jesus Christ. The 'key word of Oriental philosophies is Harmony, glossing over the glaring disharmonies of man's life.'This is, the heart of the dialogue that Kraemer discusses backed by his vast experience and learning. Kraemer provides a formative and fundamental tool for Christians and all who are aspire to an intelligent and penetrative understanding of the religious and cultural life of the world.

In Religion and the Christian Faith he deals with many of the criticisms of his position, and offers an apologia, at once luminous and mass…ive, of the Christian religion as the revelation of God to Man and the faith for all mankind. There is a decisive Christian finality about Kraemer's writing, and his book is a significant contribution to the sharp discipline of faith and action under which the universal Christian community lives. All the way through his formidably marshalled arguments run the undertones of Christian involvement in a real, world - a world which, by his astonishing grasp of philosophy, Biblical theology and the claims of religion and religions, the Author brings alive to the reader. The reading of this formative book, with its strenuous demands on the reader's intelligence and Christian understanding, is a rewarding experience.
